49ers | D. Smith’s days with team could be numbered

Matt Maiocco, of the Santa Rosa Press Democrat, reports San Francisco 49ers LB Derek M. Smith saw his role with the team reduced dramatically towards the end of the 2007 season. He is scheduled to earn $3.28 million in 2008, the final year of his contract. The team could decide to cut him or negotiate a pay cut if they feel it does not make sense to pay his salary for 2008.
