Mariners | Stottlemyre's deal is for one year
Updating previous items, the Associated Press' Gregg Bell reports Seattle Mariners pitching coach Mel Stottlemyre is working on a one-year deal. The 65-year-old Stottlemyre (cancer) was cleared by his doctor this past summer to return to work on a full-time basis, but he is hoping this is just the first of a series of one-year deals with the club. "I certainly hope it lasts for more than one year," said Stottlemyre. "Whatever happens, at my age and certainly with my health issue, I'm excited for the opportunity." He was also the No. 1 choice for the job, according to Mariners manager John McLaren. The Mariners' starters ranked just 12th in the American League this past season with a 5.12 ERA.
