Dolphins | Defense To Change?

Alex Marvez reports for the Sun Sentinel the Miami Dolphins plan to implement some changes to their defensive schemes for the 2002 season. The Dolphins led the league in pass defense last season but finished 17th against the run. Defensive coordinator Jim Bates knows the team needs to improve against the run. The biggest changes could be the increased use of eight-man fronts. In that scheme, the safeties playing closer to the line of scrimmage for run support, and more zone coverage schemes. Injuries to starting DT Daryl Gardener and his backups, Jermaine Haley and Ernest Grant contributed to the problem.
