MLB | McGwire, Gwynn, Ripken Jr. headline Hall of Fame ballot
The Associated Press reports former St. Louis Cardinals 1B Mark McGwire, former San Diego Padres OF Tony Gwynn and former Baltimore Orioles SS Cal Ripken Jr. were among 17 first-time candidates listed on the 2007 baseball writers' Hall of Fame ballot. Also getting nominated for the first time were OF Jose Canseco, SP Bret Saberhagen and 3B Ken Caminiti. OF Jim Rice, who was just 53 votes short of being elected last year, heads the 15 holdovers from previous years. The vote totals will be announced Jan. 9, 2007.
