Bears | Team asking Manning to change coverage style
Brad Biggs, of the Chicago Sun-Times, reports Chicago Bears CB Ricky Manning Jr. is being expected to change the way he has covered receivers for the past seven years. Instead of trying to force receivers to the inside of the field where more help is waiting, like he did in Carolina and in college at UCLA, Manning is now being asked to force the receivers outside towards the sidelines. Also, instead of playing with his back to the ball, the new system requires Manning to cover receivers while facing the quarterback. ''This is a huge difference because he was used to playing with his back to the ball,'' defensive coordinator Ron Rivera said. ''We want to see the quarterback. I think he's adjusting well.''
