Steelers | Ex-C Mike Webster Awarded Disability Benefits
Michael Hasch and Kevin Gorman, of the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, report the NFL's Retirement and Player Supplemental Disability Plan has been ordered to pay the estate of former C Mike Webster about $1.2 million in additional benefits, according to a federal court Tuesday, April 26. Sunny Jani, an administrator of Webster's estate, had sued the Bert Bell/Pete Rozelle retirement program for wrongful denial of benefits for the family of Webster, who died at age 50 in Septemeber of 2002, following triple bypass surgery. Webster was examined by physicians in 1998 and they found that the constant blows to the head he had received during his career had left him with severe brain damage that left him unfit for any type of gainful employment.
