Cubs | Mercker Speaks About Stone-Caray Controversy

Updating previous items, Carrie Muskat, of Cubs.MLB.com, reports free agent RP Kent Mercker is trying to get his side of the story out regarding the controversy between former Cubs announcer Steve Stone and himself. "I didn't threaten him with bodily harm and I didn't get in his face," said Mercker. Mercker also said the entire incident started Aug. 27, after he called the Cubs' media relations director to ask why then-Cubs broadcaster Chip Caray had referred to an outing by Houston Astros SP Roy Oswalt as "brilliant", after Oswalt had given up six runs on seven hits. "I asked her to ask Caray how six runs in eight innings can be brilliant," said Mercker. "I should have known better." Mercker also said he had tried to let Caray know "it wasn't a big deal" the following morning, but that Stone told him, "It's too late."
