Expos | Smith Likely to Return

Updating a previous item, Bill Ladson, of, reports P Dan Smith (arm, shoulder, back), who was released by the Montreal Expos Oct. 12 following a slate of injury problems, plans to sign a minor league deal with the Expos. "I have no thoughts or desires to pitch for another team," said Smith. "The Expos have been loyal to me during my injury." He also said he understood their reason for releasing him in the first place was "as protection just in case I'm not ready to pitch next year." The 29-year-old pitcher hasn't pitched in a game since June 2003 because of arm, shoulder and back problems.
