Mariners | Higher Bid Doesn’t Work For Burks
The Seattle Post-Intelligencer reports despite outbidding the Boston Red Sox for OF Ellis Burks, the Seattle Mariners lost out on the veteran, who signed a $750,000, one-year contract to return to the Red Sox on Thursday, Feb. 5. "We called soon after the (former Mariners CL) Kazuhiro Sasaki departure was confirmed (freeing up salary money for Seattle), but apparently he'd gone down the road quite a bit with Boston," Mariners general manager Bill Bavasi said. "Because he'd gone down the road with Boston, we had to be aggressive. I'm pretty sure our offer was better than theirs." Seattle's offer reportedly was $1.25 million.
