Reds | Smitherman Honored's Todd Lorenz reports Cincinnati Reds OF Stephen Smitherman was named the Reds' Minor League Player of the Year for 2003. He hit .310 with 19 home runs and 73 RBIs at Double-A Chattanooga, but hit only .127 in 17 Triple-A games and .159 in 21 games with the Reds. However, he produced strong numbers in Arizona Fall League play, hitting .295 with three home runs, two stolen bases, and 20 RBIs in 24 games for the Scottsdale Scorpions. "He's a big strong kid who can play the corner outfield positions," said Reds director of player development Tim Naehring. "His biggest skill is the ability to drive the ball, hit for average and power."
