Rockies | More on Vaughn Callup
Updating a previous item, the AP’s John Mossman reports the Colorado Rockies promoted OF Greg Vaughn from Triple-A Colorado Springs Wednesday on the heels of a play-me-or-release-me demand from the 37-year-old player. Vaughn was willing, however, to extend the deadline for such a decision from June 1 to July 1 to give himself a chance to demonstrate he could play defensively in the outfield. Vaughn has been hampered by a pulled groin and sore hip flexor. Manager Clint Hurdle stated the team made the move to bolster its offense. Also the team is due to play six games in American League ballparks from June 9-15, when the designated hitter rule will be in effect. Hurdle indicated the pending need for a DH was only one aspect of the decision to bring him aboard. Vaughn was hitting .295 with 10 home runs and 32 RBI in 34 games with Colorado Springs at the time of his promotion.
