Lions | Could Owe Former RB Sanders Money
The Detroit News reports the Detroit Lions and former Lions RB Barry Sanders are in the midst of an arbitration process to determine if the franchise owes him an option payment of $700,000 that was included in a clause in his last contract. In 1997, Sanders signed a six-year, $36 million contract with a signing bonus of $11 million. He retired after the 1998 season. The Lions' position is that Sanders never qualified for the $700,000 option payment because he retired long before it would have kicked in. It is not known what year the option payment was due, but it is believed to be for the fourth year.
