2011 NFL Draft – Pick 38: Ryan Williams, RB, Arizona Cardinals
By Cory J. Bonini on April 29, 2011
The Arizona Cardinals selected Virginia Tech running back Ryan Williams with the 38th overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.
Fantasy analysis: Williams is a game-breaker with injury concerns. He is a three-down back if Arizona chooses to use him as such. Tim Hightower is a potential free agent, and his receiving as well as blocking skills would likely keep Williams off the field on third down. If Hightower walks, LaRod Stephens-Howling has a similar skill set, but he may not hold up against the blitz well enough.
The Cardinals appear likely to address their quarterback need in free agency by landing a veteran, which will help take some pressure off of Williams, instead of the other way around.
Former first-round choice Beanie Wells is probably going to be dealt or released, unless Hightower defects. Wells has battled injuries and isn't much of a receiver, which bodes well for Williams from a playing time standpoint. Arizona's offensive line is missing a few pieces, but they have time in the draft and free agency to address the interior of this unit.
The former Hokie could be a quality fantasy option in 2011, but you have to be aware of the uncertainty in this backfield. Wait for the situation to shake out before deeming him a soon-to-be stud, but all of the physical tools are there for Williams to succeed. He is a must-pick in full-retention formats.
