Unfortunately, the Cards aren't the butt of an April Fool's joke. Early reports say Holliday's timetable will be examined after the surgery. As a frame of reference, the Milwaukee Brewers' Corey Hart underwent the procedure in August 2009 and missed 33 games.
The Cards will probably go with some mixture of Jon Jay and Allen Craig to fill in. Jay would be on the favorable side of a platoon setup and offers better batting average help, even if there's some correction in tow from his lofty 2010 numbers. But there's a chance St. Louis decides Craig, who boasts more power upside, could run with the job. Remember, though, that his impact would be mitigated in a straight lefty-righty bat setup.
Jay is the better add for playing time but is hardly a lock. A replacement for Holliday in mixed leagues, save cavernous formats, shouldn't come from this outfield. Luckily, outfielders in those setups are more abundant, so you can probably bide your time with a more serviceable warm body.
Stay tuned to Hot off the Wire for the latest on how St. Louis will plug the gap.
