Fantasy Football Insider – Week 5

By KFFL Staff on October 7, 2011

Is your fantasy football team ready for Week 5? The following fantasy football tidbits are key items we are hearing from behind the scenes entering this weekend.

Can you beat KFFL's Cory Bonini? We know you want to! Our friends at FanDuel.com have set up a fun salary cap fantasy football challenge for Week 5 where you take on Cory. It is free to play and all you have to do is finish higher than Cory to land $5 in your bankroll. There is $500 worth of prizes being dished out to the top teams. Do you have what it takes? Try to beat Cory now!

16.49

Cincinnati Bengals The Cincinnati Bengals and Jacksonville Jaguars should run often in a potentially sloppy Week 5; the Jacksonville forecast calls for an 80 percent chance of rain, maybe their second rain-soaked affair in three weeks. Both teams start rookie QBs. Plus, the Jags know they should've gone to Maurice Jones-Drew more in Week 4. Cincy will feed the apparently disgruntled Cedric Benson, possibly along with Bernard Scott and Brian Leonard to evaluate them ahead of Benson's potential suspension. - Tim Heaney

16.47

Jacksonville Jaguars Our Jacksonville Jaguars scribe finally got a chance to see Blaine Gabbert play in favorable weather and came away impressed with the rook's poise. Gabbert has a good command of the offense and the huddle, and the team is rallying behind him. He has the talent and form to be a great QB eventually, even with the growing pains he'll probably have for the rest of the season. - Tim Heaney

16.43

Carolina Panthers The next top-notch cornerback to emerge? Either way, Captain Munnerlyn has earned the attention of New Orleans Saints head coach Sean Payton. Maybe N'awlins will avoid throwing in the Carolina Panthers DB's direction, which could add even more frustration to the already frustrated fantasy owners of Saints skill players. - Tim Heaney

16.42

New Orleans Saints New Orleans Saints tackle Zach Strief (knee) will be out for the next few weeks, but don't expect tight end Jimmy Graham to stay in to block more. New Orleans is comfortable using others along the line and in the backfield to stave off rushers. - Tim Heaney

16.41

New Orleans Saints Marques Colston will see something close to a full workload this week. The New Orleans Saints are probably handling him like they did with Lance Moore - first game back, not many plays, but Round 2, full go. - Tim Heaney

16.40

Buffalo Bills The Buffalo Bills look to have a clear Week 5 advantage along the defensive line. Rookie DE Marcell Dareus will go up against another freshman in the Philadelphia Eagles left tackle Danny Watkins, who'll be making his first NFL start. - Tim Heaney

16.39

Philadelphia Eagles Nnamdi Asomugha clearly looks out of place in the Philadelphia Eagles' defense. His man-to-man abilities aren't maximized in this zone, and he has been uncharacteristically burned on several occasions. Philly isn't going to switch to a man-coverage scheme anytime soon. In 2012, they might, but for now, it's going to be rough. - Tim Heaney

16.39

Philadelphia Eagles It isn't that Juan Castillo isn't a smart football mind. It's just perplexing that the Philadelphia Eagles decided to shift their former offensive line coach over to defensive coordinator, especially in a season with little camp time. The occasional chat with Jim Johnson and a superficial understanding of defenses from an O-line point of view are hardly a recipe for NFL DC success. It wouldn't surprise if they made a change after the season. - Tim Heaney

16.37

Buffalo Bills The Buffalo Bills' Fred Jackson should continue the success opponents have had against the Philadelphia Eagles' Wide 9 setup, which has hardly been the solution they thought it'd be for stopping the run. - Tim Heaney

16.36

Indianapolis Colts Expect the Peyton Manning (neck) "charade" to end soon with the Indianapolis Colts putting him on Injured Reserve in the next few weeks. They're too banged up and too far behind in even sniffing the postseason to prolong the roster move.  - Tim Heaney

16.35

New York Giants The New York Giants' run D hasn't been as bad as the last two weeks' worth of stats say. They gave up big runs to LeSean McCoy and Beanie Wells, but otherwise held them in check. They're still considered strong enough that the Seattle Seahawks' Marshawn Lynch will probably have trouble against them this week. - Tim Heaney

15.58

Green Bay Packers The Green Bay Packers could have DB Charles Woodson on Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez this week; he's probably too tough a matchup for anyone else. Will it matter much, though? Gonzo looks fresher than he has in years, and Woodson is losing a step. Don't expect a complete shutdown like Woodson could've done in years past.  - Tim Heaney

15.51

New England PatriotsThe Pats have a lot of respect for the New York Jets' pass rush, so they'll likely keep Rob Gronkowski in to block a lot this week. Our source said Gronk, who is one of the best blocking tight ends in the league, will be a "glorified sixth lineman" this weekend. This is also due in part to Sebastian Vollmer (back) being out of the starting lineup. The expected return of Aaron Hernandez (knee) should allow this to work, and it will also keep Chad Ochocinco off the field for most of the game. - Cory J. Bonini

15.33

New England PatriotsTom Brady completed just 53.3 percent of his throws last week against the Oakland Raiders, which was his second game in a row that wasn't particularly Brady-like. The short of it all: He simply was off. Brady was good with his short and intermediate throws, but he went 1-for-7 on passes that traveled at least 20 yards in the air. He is entitled to the occasional off-week or two, but there is no obvious reason to be alarmed. - Cory J. Bonini

15.14

New York GiantsFor the near future, we'll probably see a rotation across from wideout Hakeem Nicks between starter Mario Manningham and the somewhat emerging Victor Cruz. Manningham frustrated Eli Manning with some sloppy routes and miscommunications in the first quarter of Week 4. No ill effects from his concussion, though. It'd be surprising if Manningham, who has more upside than Cruz, doesn't get his job back and shine down the road. Buy low.  - Tim Heaney

15.07

Seattle Seahawks The Seattle Seahawks will have their hands full with the New York Giants in two vital spots on offense: Seattle rookie right tackle James Carpenter goes up against dynamic New York Giants pass rusher Jason Pierre-Paul, and Sidney Rice tangles with cornerback Corey Webster, who contained Larry Fitzgerald for most of last week's game. - Tim Heaney

14.42

Green Bay Packers Tramon Williams isn't hampered much physically by his recent shoulder injury, but the Green Bay Packers cornerback has changed his style because of it the last few weeks. He's giving a little more cushion, and his lack of jamming is allowing more catches to go against him. This could be a vulnerability, especially in the red zone  (normally a safe place for the D), against a talented Atlanta Falcons passing game in Week 5. Maybe there will also be more positives for the St. Louis Rams and Minnesota Vikings, Green Bay's next two opponents. - Tim Heaney

14.35

Green Bay Packers Ryan Grant (kidney) won't have physical limitations outside of his split workload with James Starks. The Green Bay Packers will run with the hot hand, but Starks is the cheese that'll probably stand alone for most of the season. - Tim Heaney

14.34

Kansas City Chiefs As if the Indianapolis Colts' run defense wasn't already a sieve, expect it to get much worse with the loss of defensive tackle Eric Foster (ankle) to Injured Reserve. It'll remain a solid fantasy matchup, which for this week is the Kansas City Chiefs' backfield committee of Thomas JonesDexter McCluster, Le'Ron McClain and Jackie Battle, who's slated to see more work. - Tim Heaney

14.20

Detroit LionsThe Detroit Lions can't help but be conscious of their slow starts of their last two games, so they plan to change things up in their Monday Night Football contest with the Chicago Bears. Scott Linehan has wanted to establish the run so that defenses can't tee off on Matthew Stafford, but in Week 5the Lions going to be aggressive and not force the issue. Perhaps Detroit loosens up Chicago's front seven as the game wears on, but fantasy owners should be aware that the Lions' passing game must be successful against the Bears' Cover 2 early for that to happen. - Nicholas Minnix

14.18

Chicago BearsMore than once, Jim Schwartz has discussed the attention that his team must pay to Matt Forte in Week 5. The Detroit Lions won't change much about the way they play, but their defensive line gets after the quarterback and is thus susceptible to the dump-offs and screens that have worked so well for the Chicago Bears. Detroit may spy Forte, and they've been playing more zone recently to keep their corners' eyes up-field. Forte owners have no reason to bench him, but they should be aware that he's a target. - Nicholas Minnix

14.16

Detroit LionsThose fantasy football players who think that Titus Young's recent production and Nate Burleson's recent lack of it are indicative of things to come would probably be mistaken. When the Detroit Lions go three-wide, Young is outside, Burleson is inside; when they're in a base set, it's only Calvin Johnson and Burleson. That won't change any time soon. What hurts the fantasy prospects of both is that Megatron, Brandon Pettigrew and Jahvid Best are ahead of them. - Nicholas Minnix

13.59

Indianapolis Colts If the Indianapolis Colts are looking to involve Joseph Addai and Delone Carter more in the offense, their matchup with the Kansas City Chiefs would be a good start. Indy has been dogged in time of possession because they can't keep their defense off the field. Addai has a 4.6 yards-per-carry average so far. - Tim Heaney

13.56

Indianapolis Colts If you want to pick up Pierre Garcon after his Week 4 display, fine. But remember, his two long touchdowns came with plenty of defensive help, and he'll remain radically inconsistent and laden with dropped passes. The Indianapolis Colts still don't have a major beneficiary with Curtis Painter taking snaps. - Tim Heaney

13.18

Chicago BearsDon't be terribly worried about Marion Barber III stealing goal line carries from Matt Forte. Last week's touchdown run by the Barbarian came right after Forte ripped off a 40-yard jaunt and needed a breather. Look for more of MB3 if the Bears are playing a lead. - Cory J. Bonini

13.09

Chicago BearsJay Cutler was sacked only once last week, and the offensive line isn't as poor in pass protection as you may think. The Bears were throwing the ball far too much in their first three games, which allowed defenses to tee off on Cutler. Against the Detroit Lions this week, expect a lot of screen passes, draws and play-action passing to try to slow down the pace of the game. - Cory J. Bonini

12.31

Atlanta FalconsThe Atlanta Falcons' defense misses the presence of Jonathan Babineaux (knee), who isn't a lock to return in Week 5. In the season opener, Babineaux's only game thus far, Atlanta recorded five sacks and 11 or 12 QB hits. In three games since, zero sacks and approximately the same number of QB hits combined. Perhaps that's where Ray Edwards, who's known to disappear at times, especially early in a season, can lay some blame. But the Falcons would probably like to see some sacks in exchange for their million or so. - Nicholas Minnix

12.29

Atlanta FalconsTo try to slow the Green Bay Packers' pass rush this week, the Atlanta Falcons will probably employ the no-huddle a bit and their base-22 formation as often as possible. That means a lot of Roddy White, Julio Jones, Tony Gonzalez, Michael Turner and Ovie Mughelli on the field, with changes perhaps coming in personnel but not in the package. Fantasy owners usually have Atlanta's main weapons in their lineups, but those in need of bye-week help and hoping to use a fringe contributor on the Falcons should look elsewhere, to be safe. - Nicholas Minnix

12.14

Tennessee Titans Look for the Tennessee Titans' Chris Johnson to have a big day against a Pittsburgh Steelers defense that flows hard to the ball and is undergoing a change at linebacker with James Harrison (eye) out for at least a month. The Houston Texans' Arian Foster burned Pittsburgh in Week 4 with his cutback ability; CJ2K is regaining his and could abuse an aging, banged-up Steel Curtain that's looking more like paper. - Tim Heaney

12.11

Pittsburgh Steelers Don't expect the Pittsburgh Steelers to change the deep drops or anything else about Ben Roethlisberger's passing game for Week 5, even if his range will probably be limited by his sprained left foot. He'll probably suit up and rely on emerging safety valve Antonio Brown more than elite deep stud Mike Wallace, unless they get the ball in Wallace's hands sooner instead of relying on his downfield routes. - Tim Heaney

12.10

Pittsburgh Steelers Intriguing Pittsburgh Steelers toter Isaac Redman, a hot pickup this week, should see more touches regardless of Rashard Mendenhall's (hamstring) status. But even with the potential for 20-25 carries, Redman won't be a fantasy savior. The Steelers' O-line has been putrid and is relying on Max Starks for an upgrade. Plus, our Pittsburgh scribe doesn't think Redman can do what Mendy does on a full workload, especially against a stout Tennessee Titans D. - Tim Heaney
