
The Seattle Mariners have placed first baseman Russell Branyan (back) on the 15-day disabled list due to inflammation and a herniated disc in his back.
Branyan suffered the injury Friday, Aug. 28, while checking his swing during an at-bat in the third inning. An MRI exam Saturday, Aug. 29 revealed the injury, and there is no timetable for his return. Seattle plans to see how Branyan feels after a couple of days off before deciding on a treatment. The Toronto Blue Jays have placed closer Scott Downs (foot) on the 15-day disabled list after he aggravated the same left foot injury that forced him to the DL in June. Downs was hit in the leg by a line drive off the bat of Oakland Athletics designated hitter Jack Cust Saturday, Aug. 1, but remained in the game to face one more batter before being removed. The Seattle Mariners have placed starting pitcher Erik Bedard (shoulder) on the 15-day disabled list due to left shoulder inflammation. It is the second time this season he has landed on the DL because of an inflamed shoulder.
