2011 NFL Draft – Pick 20: Adrian Clayborn, DE, Tampa Bay Buccaneers

By Cory J. Bonini on April 28, 2011

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Iowa defensive end Adrian Clayborn with the 20th overall pick of the 2011 NFL Draft.

Does he have what it takes to improve their pass rush?

Fantasy analysis: The Bucs needed a pass-rushing defensive end. Clayborn isn't a natural pass rusher, but he isn't terrible, either. An all-around talent, he will help against the run more than anything.

This pick didn't make a lot of sense for the Buccaneers, as Da'Quan Bowers would have been a better pass-rushing option, but it's understandable if Tampa Bay wasn't keen on picking another Clemson defensive end.

Fantasy owners shouldn't consider Clayborn draftable in IDP leagues, and Tampa Bay's team defense remains a No. 2 unit in deep leagues.

Cory, I’d not be too hasty on this one. Bowers is a huge risk with his knee injury and those things (meniscus) can be problematic forever. Mark Dominic has done a great job getting players that fit the Bucs style. A look at his past two drafts is a testament to that.

    Hey Ben,

I’m of the mindset after having some time to sleep on it that Clayborn will help Gerald McCoy quite a bit. From a football standpoint, Clayborn is a solid pick for the team as a whole. I really don’t see him being an explosive pass rusher, but that may not have been what Dominik felt Tampa needed most. I agree that he fits their style well. From a fantasy perspective, I see little impact here.

As for Bowers, coming from a person with a lengthy history of cartilage problems (I currently need microfracture surgery), I hear ya. I’m am more worried about his one year of production than the knee injury, actually.
