I evaluated Matt Capps‘ 2009 struggles in the July 30 edition of KFFL.com’s Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat, but I wasn’t finished. The righty is out of character, and I believe it traces back to some changes he incorporated this past spring.
In a Wednesday night battle that was scoreless through nine stages, Capps entered the bottom of the 10th against the San Francisco Giants and allowed a leadoff single to left fielder Eugenio Velez. The speedster advanced on a sac bunt and later scored on a base hit to right. Loser, Capps. He fell to 2-6, with 20 saves in 22 chances; he has a 6.15 ERA and a 1.78 WHIP in 33 2/3 innings. Jon Heyman, of SI.com, reports the Boston Red Sox acquired catcher Victor Martinez from the Cleveland Indians Friday, July 31, in exchange for pitchers Justin Masterson, Nick Hagadone and Bryan Price.
Martinez was not acquired for his defense. The Sox figure to use him at first base and designated hitter and perhaps let him share catching duties with Jason Varitek. Want more? Keep reading…

FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal and Jon Paul Morosi report the Detroit Tigers acquired starting pitcher Jarrod Washburn from the Seattle Mariners for pitcher Luke French and pitcher Mauricio Robles.
Washburn leaves one pitchers’ park for a more neutral location and leaves the AL West for the AL Central, which boasts comparable offenses. Washburn’s win total could receive a boost with the Tigers’ powerful offense behind him. Detroit’s bullpen (4.16 ERA) hasn’t been quite as steady as Seattle’s (3.89 ERA) at upholding leads, though. Overall, his fantasy value stays about the same, with the potential upgrade in wins. Want more? Keep reading…

I’ll be the first to say it: I don’t care for Michael Vick and what he did. However, before you send the hate or I agree with you e-mails, please finish reading the blog.
It may not be manly to say this, but I’m a passionate dog lover because they give unconditional love and humans don’t. You come home and who’s there to greet you at the door every single time without question? Not your friends, not even your spouse, it’s your dog! Want more? Keep reading…

Ken Gurnick, of MLB.com, reports the Los Angeles Dodgers acquired relief pitcher George Sherrill from the Baltimore Orioles Thursday, July 30, in exchange for third baseman Josh Bell and pitcher Steven Johnson, according to baseball sources.
Sherrill pitched well for the Orioles this year, recording 20 saves in 23 chances and posting an ERA of 2.40 in 41 1/3 innings pitched. He also struck out 39 batters and issued just 13 walks. Want more? Keep reading…

It all comes down to the choice wording, and Brett Favre has shown us he is incapable of definitively putting an end to rumors. Saying things like “retired, at this time” or that he is “unlikely” to change his mind haven’t and don’t exactly slam the door on his potential comeback(s). Then again, he said after his latest retirement that he would not play again. While he flirted with the idea (more or less leaving a bride at the altar), it has been so far so good on Favre keeping his word. Want more? Keep reading…

Joey Logano looks to conquer the Tricky Triangle.
This week the NASCAR Sprint Cup series returns to Pocono Raceway for the Sunoco Red Cross Pennsylvania 500. Each of Pocono’s three turns are modeled after three different popular tracks and thus banked differently, turn two is molded after Indianapolis Motor Speedway where last week’s race was held) Connecting the turns are three straight-aways which each differ in length creating the odd track configuration that has earned the nickname, “The Tricky Triangle.” Want more? FOXSports.com’s Ken Rosenthal reports the Philadelphia Phillies acquired starting pitcher Cliff Lee and outfielder Ben Francisco from the Cleveland Indians for starting pitcher Jason Knapp, starter Carlos Carrasco, shortstop Jason Donald and catcher Lou Marson. The deal is pending a medical review.
Lee’s fantasy value stays about the same with the trade; there could be a grace period as National League hitters adjust to Lee’s repertoire. He may also receive better run support; Lee’s run support average was 5.03, one of the worst marks in the majors, despite Cleveland’s high-ranking offense. The 30-year-old lefty leaves a hitters’ park for a more hitter-friendly park, but he enters an arguably weaker-hitting division. Want more? Keep reading…

Fantasy owners are discriminating against Adrian Peterson by assuming he isn’t good enough to be No. 1 in point-per-reception leagues. I can’t argue the fact he does not catch many passes, but I look at the overall No. 1 as someone who can produce consistently, is proven and has upside. Finally, there are as few questions as possible about his ability to post top-tier fantasy points. Peterson fits the bill. Want more? Keep reading…
