Joey Votto of no confidence: DL for Reds masher

tim-heaney-fantasy-baseball-alert Joey Votto (stress) was making fantasy baseball owners dizzy with his own spells. Now, at least he has a set schedule for PT.

The Cincinnati Reds first sacker was sent to the DL after enduring an extended bout with dizziness caused by an ear infection.

Votto tried fighting through the lightheadedness but had to exit several games. For more info read here and here. Want more? Keep reading…

The Matt Wieters premiere, the Zach Duke redemption and the Ricky Nolasco stretch

tim-heaney-rounding-the-basesWelcome to the Happy Hour edition of Rounding the Bases. Each week, Tim Heaney takes you around the majors with his spin on fantasy baseball trends, news highlights and player scouting. He welcomes you to join him as he circles the bags at his admirably slow pace.

Wunderkind Matt Wieters now has to meet the hype. I’m tempering my hopes for him for this season. If you were able to stash him while accounting for the clogged roster spot, bully for you.

If you tucked him away and are lagging behind, well, good night … and good luck.

Out of the box

In my “Are they for real?” blog Tuesday, I talked about whether or not some fast starters are anomalies. I left out one name that I have been wavering on: Zach Duke. Want more? Keep reading…

cory-j-bonini-misanthropic-musingDo the San Diego Chargers need a new stadium?

The reasoning proponents of new digs for the Chargers offer is 1) more luxury boxes for corporations results in more revenue 2) more advertising dollars come in the door 3) the Super Bowl will eventually return to “America’s Finest City.” All three reasons are fair and make perfectly good sense. cory-j-bonini-misanthropic-musingShould more of the blame fall on Dale Earnhardt Jr.?

Dale Jr.’s crew chief, Tony Eury Jr., who is also his cousin, has been demoted by Hendrick Motorsports owner Rick Hendrick after totaling just one win in 48 races. Earnhardt, try as he might, was unable to influence the boss to keep Eury on board for the rest of the year. Want more? Keep reading…

Around the league with Fran Tarkenton and Brett Favre!

william-del-pilar-diatribeI’m sure it is not surprising to any of us that future Hall of Fame quarterback Brett Favre is back in the news. This time, current HOF quarterback Fran Tarkenton, one of the greatest scrambling quarterbacks to ever play the game, had some choice words for him. Let’s get to it as it’s a fun soap opera event every time we talk about Favre.

Part I – HOF QB Fran Tarkenton on future HOF QB Brett Favre: “… he has made more stupid plays than any great quarterback …”

I’m so thrilled someone said this. At KFFL we do have lively, and at times, heated debates. KFFL managing editor Cory J. Bonini and I have gone through our rounds of Favre debates. Those who read my blog know I believe he’s the most overrated modern-day quarterback. You find greatness among players that consistently overcome professional and personal challenges. That is, adversity. Want more? Keep reading…

bryce-mcrae-the-bryce-is-rightFirst, congratulations to Barcelona, who won the UEFA Champions League Final with a two-nil win over Manchester United. They were easily the more deserving of the two sides. Time to prepare for another summer of endless Ronaldo-to-Real Madrid rumors.

Now, back to football on this side of the Atlantic. OTAs have started up and training camp is just under two months away. It’s time for my first rankings of the year. We’ll break this down by conference, starting with the NFC today. Want more? Keep reading…

Are these fantasy baseball players for real?

tim-heaney-rounding-the-basesJudging upswings requires analyzing a player’s statistical patterns and innate skills. Can surging commodities sustain outrageous numbers, or should you cash in now?

SS Jason Bartlett, Tampa Bay RaysReliable for modest runs and steals, Bartlett has typically posted solid line-drive numbers (2009: a freakish 28.7 percent), but his 2009 0.90 groundball-to-flyball ratio and .224 isolated power scream fluke. Want more? Keep reading…

As Memorial Day weekend wraps up, I hope you experienced family time in great weather. Despite the sad state our country is in, we still live in the greatest country in the world. Don’t ever forget that.

For those who have asked, sure the stories I talk about may be a week or two old, but that’s the fun part of the offseason. Most stories will drag on for weeks, even months, percolating before concluding. It’s a different pace from the fast-paced in-season stories. It’s one that I enjoy, so let’s get to what I’ve seen crossing my desk recently.

HC Jim Harbaugh, Baltimore Ravens, on TE Todd Heap: “He’s not as far along as we all thought he would be…”

I love Heap as he was the tight end who would sell himself out for the team with his body. He’s paying the price now. His body continually breaking down is a product of his style of play. I believe Heap is done! I thought if he could return to health last year he could make a difference, but with the team drafting tight end Davon Drew and signing L.J. Smith to a one-year deal, they agree with me. Move on and ignore him on draft day. Want more? Keep reading…

Sadly, my week that started so great ended badly. Nothing bad in my life, it just didn’t pan out in carrying out some projects. Sigh, what can you say when a curveball comes your way? You swing and hear a big “pfft” of bat hitting nothing but empty air! That’s why we call it life, but we have a great holiday weekend coming up! As we enter Memorial Day weekend, be safe, have fun and enjoy the fact we live in the greatest country in the world.

Before we get to my blog, I want to congratulate my dear friend Evian “Chico” Rivera, who is graduating this week from San Diego State. Congratulations brother! It took awhile, but you’ve done it! Want more? Keep reading…
