Falcons latest news and notes

Falcons | Asante Samuel appeared to suffer injury

Atlanta Falcons CB Asante Samuel (ankle) appeared to suffer an ankle injury during practice Wednesday, June 19. Trainer Marty Lauzon was looking at Samuel's right ankle after the incident occurred.

Falcons | Tony Gonzalez explains decision to return

Atlanta Falcons TE Tony Gonzalez said he decided to return because his son told him he owed it to himself to take another shot at winning a championship. "But really it came down to what my little 12-year-old boy said. He said, 'You know what, Dad, you got a great football team, you guys got a chance to go get a Super Bowl,' and he knows that's the only reason I'm playing at this point. So he said go back and try it one more time. So that's why I'm here, that's why I'm going to be coming back," he said. Gonzalez said he was leaning toward retirement because he wanted to spend more time with his family.

Falcons | Julio Jones cuts out beef, pork

Atlanta Falcons WR Julio Jones has cut beef and pork out of his diet over the past year and feels "much better. Especially playing football, I feel that stuff sits on you." He also now prefers organic over regular food while also taking advice from the team nutritionist.

Falcons | Matt Ryan extension talks expected to pick up

The Atlanta Falcons and QB Matt Ryan both would like to extend the quarterback's contract, but an agreement has not yet been reached. However, casual talks are ongoing, with the expectation that things will heat up after the July 4 holiday, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.

Falcons | Two participating in practice

Atlanta Falcons LB Sean Weatherspoon (knee) and Stephen Nicholas (hernia) both participated in minicamp practice Thursday, June 18.

Redskins latest news and notes

Redskins | Brian Orakpo not worried about contract situation

Washington Redskins LB Brian Orakpo (pectoral) is not worried about his contract expiring after this season, saying it will take care of itself.

Redskins | Make roster moves

The Washington Redskins waived TE DeAngelo Peterson (foot) and DL Doug Worthington (biceps) and signed free-agent PK John Potter (Bills), who was the kickoff specialist for the Buffalo Bills in 2012. Peterson broke a bone in his foot last week, and Worthing suffered a triceps tendon injury which might require surgery. If unclaimed, both players would land on Injured Reserve, with the team paying for their rehab.

Redskins | Two rookie safeties could play plenty

Washington Redskins defensive coordinator Jim Haslett said FS Bacarri Rambo and Phillip Thomas could each end up playing significant minutes this season.

Redskins | Leonard Hankerson feeling more comfortable

Washington Redskins WR Leonard Hankerson said he is feeling more comfortable and confident with the offense because he has been able to participate in offseason workouts for the first time since entering the league. Hankerson is expected to enter training camp as the No. 4 wide receiver on the depth chart.

Redskins | DeAngelo Hall considered sitting out 2013

Washington Redskins CB DeAngelo Hall said he considered sitting out the entire 2013 season before deciding to re-sign with the team. "I felt like I could do some things off the field that would have been just as lucrative as coming to play. So I really had to sit back and just examine the situation, see if I did feel like I could do it again. And I felt like I could. I felt like the coaches are going to do a good job of putting me in position to be successful, and that's all you can ask for," Hall said.
