Despite a slight drop, Ryan Doumit maintained overall improvement in contact rate. Knocked his flyball and batting eye ratios up, too, in injury-shortened playing time. That's the issue; he has had trouble staying on the field. The investment in relation to other catchers doesn't call for much to lose this season; he's someone you can target in the middle positional tier as a profit opportunity.

Perennial Quad-A commodity posted elite home run rate in half-season. Flyball rate wasn't top-level, but power could be at least partially sustained when flyball rate evens out with lofty HR/FB. Hacker's BABIP was fortunate in the final two months. Garrett Jones will need to figure out left-handers before we can expect sustained success; pay for a drop-off, but you can buy late-round power before you count on anything else.

Akinori Iwamura, 2B, Pittsburgh Pirates

Walk rate high, but unfortunately batting eye isn't. Akinori Iwamura is valuable for double-digit steals potential and high run totals. However, the latter will take a hit with the Bucs. He's a last-resort second baseman in NLs but would be an optimal middle infielder in those setups.

Showed revitalized contact ability after second-half call-up. Lastings Milledge ppears willing to improve attitude. Broken finger affected his power, so working that back into health improves his chances to rebound there. Second year with flyball increase puts him on the doorstep to a homer breakout. Add 20-steal capability and you have a slick late-round upside pick.

Lightning injection after call-up, with pleasing walk rate to boot. Andrew McCutchen bulked up a little; power increase coming? Might mean sacrificing average, though clip skills are his best bet behind steals. Didn't show high-level flyball skills in minors; count on a modest growth in homers but an improvement in contact-related skills. Buccos stretched out his development, so he'll read pitches better in a full season. Mixed leaguers shouldn't be afraid to overspend on him in the middle rounds of drafts because of his top-50 potential; acquiring his steals will give you an advantage at a cheaper price than other elite thieves.

Control fuels Paul Maholm's game; strikeouts are lean. BABIP correction brought him back to earth after sparkling '08. He can gobble innings, though, making him a valuable mid-rotation commodity in deep NL leagues. He'll occasionally have in-season rental value in deep mixed, as well.

Octavio Dotel, RP, Toronto Blue Jays

Octavio Dotel RP Toronto Blue Jays

Hasn't closed frequently since '07, but Octavio Dotel has carried top-notch dominance throughout his career, even while fighting through control problems. That, age and his homer penchant should decrease your investment, but PNC Park might calm the third point. Even closers on poor teams record stats; don't discriminate - there's upside from his late-round draft-day value.
