Fantasy baseball: not afraid to travel Matt Holliday road
I've seen a lot of negative pub for Matt Holliday lately. Admittedly, his homers have been down over the past few seasons, as his grounder rates still hover near the clouds. He ain't in the Mile High City anymore, after all. Oh, and a certain Machine might be leaving this season.
But Holliday is heading into just his age-32 season; he feels older, right? The St. Louis Cardinals outfielder still boasts some of the best batting average skills in the game with consistently high BABIPs. 2011 produced his highest liner percentage in the last three seasons, and that came while fighting through various injuries.
His power looks set to bounce back, as well. And like the Griswolds, I'm not afraid to travel down Holliday Road. (I'm also thankful that the horrific 80s-ness that plagued the talented Lindsay Buckingham in that music video went away.) Tap your mouse here for more »
Banking on Lance Berkman repeat a Cardinal sin

Profit? Lance-not-a-lot
After scuffling through his NLDS, Lance Berkman has rebounded so far by going 3-for-8 with an RBI and two runs. Of course, his 2011 comeback from an injury-riddled 2010 drew much more acclaim, especially to fantasy baseballers.
Though it wasn't the New York Yankees, this St. Louis Cardinals lineup was a prime spot for him to rehab with his proximity to Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday. Berkman's renewed lower-body health and improved ability to drive inside pitches harkened back to his 2007-2009 incarnation, especially in his scorching start to 2011. See his improved line-drive rate with a sustained contact rate and still elite BB/K for the perfect batting average storm.
So how much you laying down on the soon-to-be 36-year-old to do it again? ... I'm waiting.... Tap your mouse here for more »
A plea for statistical sanity

Not every extreme is anomalous
Often, left-on-base percentage can be used as an indicator of luck - good or bad - for a pitcher. Thus, in theory, such higher- or lower-than-average figures (average being generally 72 percent) cue your intentions of trading or acquiring these soldiers of varying fortune.
But when this is cited as a reason to trade away a closer, for instance, because the percentage is bound to fall ... it's another crime against fantasy baseball and statistics. Tap your mouse here for more »
Adam Wainwright needs Tommy John surgery
The St. Louis Cardinals confirmed Adam Wainwright will need Tommy John surgery and miss the 2011 season. GM John Mozeliak cited a return timetable of 12-15 months.
As discussed yesterday, the Cards don't plan on pursuing external replacements to fill Waino's 200-plus frames; they have a dearth of pitchers to choose from - not all necessarily effective, but some have shown flashes. Tap your mouse here for more »
Adam Wainwright: Cardinals’ contingency wings
Fantasy baseball players are mourning the likely consequences coming from a significant St. Louis Cardinals injury. Oh, wait, you're NOT talking about Nick Punto's?
Adam Wainwright's elbow issue smells like Tommy John surgery, though he still needs to undergo his Wednesday examination and Thursday second opinion. Tap your mouse here for more »
Carl Crawford and more Hot Stove sizzles
The Boston Red Sox's latest coup came in the form of speedy outfielder Carl Crawford.
Maybe Fenway Park knocks off some homers, but the rest of his fantasy contributions should remain stable. Tap your mouse here for more »
