Time for the next round of Guess the Fantasy Baseball Sleeper

Dexter Fowler, OF, Colorado Rockies

Last time, it was Fowler

Congrats to master Tweeter @cmattmetric for correctly tabbing Dexter Fowler as the last correct answer to Guess the Fantasy Baseball Sleeper! Come on, is someone gonna outdo him this time? He's in the lead with a perfect two correct answers out of two queries!

Let's do another one. Our first entry of this contest in 2012, though, has a conditional tag on him. Tap your mouse here for more »

Can you name this 2012 fantasy baseball sleeper?

You can catch Keith Hernandez, Nicholas Minnix and me in the USA Today Fantasy Baseball magazine, due out on stands in early 2012.

I'll be penning an article on breakout players in 2012. You should buy the rag. But I'm going to give a quick teaser for one of my inclusions because, frankly, I'm becoming more and more excited about him the more I examine him. Tap your mouse here for more »

Banking on Lance Berkman repeat a Cardinal sin

Lance Berkman, OF, St. Louis Cardinals

Profit? Lance-not-a-lot

After scuffling through his NLDS, Lance Berkman has rebounded so far by going 3-for-8 with an RBI and two runs. Of course, his 2011 comeback from an injury-riddled 2010 drew much more acclaim, especially to fantasy baseballers.

Though it wasn't the New York Yankees, this St. Louis Cardinals lineup was a prime spot for him to rehab with his proximity to Albert Pujols and Matt Holliday. Berkman's renewed lower-body health and improved ability to drive inside pitches harkened back to his 2007-2009 incarnation, especially in his scorching start to 2011. See his improved line-drive rate with a sustained contact rate and still elite BB/K for the perfect batting average storm.

So how much you laying down on the soon-to-be 36-year-old to do it again? ... I'm waiting.... Tap your mouse here for more »

Grab a Guinness … and Nate McLouth

Spring Flings

St. Patrick's Day and March Madness - good time to invest in bar stock.

While you're grabbing a Guinness, also remember to grab upside players, especially in the outfield, where you'll have an easier time replacing your mistakes.

Since you're sipping what the Good Rats turned into gold, might as well take an Irish name for today's value alert. Tap your mouse here for more »

Spring Flings: March Madness, closer conundrums and sleeper sensations

I filled out my bracket in about five minutes today. Typically, the more thinking I do, the worse my entry performs. I have Richmond going to the Sweet 16 and Washington going to the Elite 8, mainly because I've heard some sleeper chatter on both.

And no, I didn't pick Boston University, my alma mater, to upset Kansas.

Final Four: Ohio State, Duke, Notre Dame and BYU, with Duke topping Notre Dame in the title game.

I'm far from an authority, so don't ask for any more tips.

In three days, it's St. Patrick's Day. Get your Guinness ready. But that isn't the real party. Tap your mouse here for more »

Fantasy Baseball Player Prospecting 2010: Jordan Brown, Cleveland Indians

Cleveland Indians 1B/OF Jordan Brown

Brown's mitt troubles Tribe a bit

Jordan Brown was called up by the Cleveland Indians on July 31 to take time in the outfield and at designated hitter with Travis Hafner (shoulder) on the DL. In his first eight games, Brown, a first baseman and outfielder, is 7-for-27 with four doubles, one RBI and four runs scored.

In 272 at-bats for Triple-A Columbus, the 26-year-old hit .309 with six homers and 63 RBIs, along with a serviceable .344 on-base percentage and a .474 slugging percentage. Brown hit .381 with 14 RBIs in the 10 games prior to his MLB arrival.

Fantasy Baseball Player Prospecting 2010: Mitch Moreland, Texas Rangers

Texas Rangers 1B/OF Mitch Moreland

How much more of Moreland will we see?

The trade of Justin Smoak and the demotion of Chris Davis allowed first baseman Mitch Moreland to join the Texas Rangers' lineup. First base looks to be the lefty stick's job to lose, even with recently acquired Jorge Cantu playing against some righties.

Moreland, 25 in September, has seven hits in his first 25 at-bats, with two RBIs, three hits and two stolen bases. The 2007 17th-round pick used to be a two-way player but eventually ditched his mid-90s fastball to focus on batter's box duty.

First-Half Fantasy Baseball All-Stars

Here's the second annual Rounding the Bases First-Half All-Star team, gauging the fantasy baseball studs based on profit return on draft or pickup value, not necessarily overall performance alone. No Hanley Ramirez, Miguel Cabrera, etc - only those midrange and late grabs that are putting you over the top.

Best of all, no Joe Buck or Tim McCarver. I promise.

Cleveland Indians' Shin-Soo Choo placed on DL

The Cleveland Indians have placed OF Shin-Soo Choo (thumb) on the 15-day disabled list because of a sprained right thumb, according to MLB.com's John Barone. The move is retroactive to Saturday, July 3, and he could be sidelined until September.
