Count me among Jim Thome’s homies

Jim Thome, DH, Minnesota Twins

How can you not cheer for Thome?

"Jim Thome just hit the quietest 600th homer in MLB history." (Ugh, a quote lede. Forgive me, Jack.)

Full disclosure: That Thome blurb graced my Facebook wall Monday. Come on, we all plagiarize ourselves. If John Fogerty did it, then it's OK with me.

The Walled statement got some Likes, but it also demands a Repeat button. Tap your mouse here for more »

Fantasy baseball: Don’t write off Francisco Liriano

Francisco Liriano is scary - unfortunately, not 2010 scary. More like 2009.

The proximate pachyderm is his increasing effort to pitch more to contact, which the Minnesota Twins' staff has suggested since last season to help curb his high pitch counts. Zone pounding is club doctrine, after all.

Thing is, this pitcher's 2010 swinging strike percentage led all MLB starters, and his grounder rate was also near the top. Tap your mouse here for more »

Are you ready for some … more baseball? OK, so there's football, too

I worry often about the New York Yankees rotation when I'm off the fantasy baseball clock - oh, wait, that never really happens, does it?

Anyway, even as fantasy football season is starting (shameless plug for our Draft Guide - last-minute folk - and Week 1 rankings), don't forget about fall baseball: Tap your mouse here for more »

Fantasy baseball keeper: Francisco Liriano or Clay Buchholz?

As I trolled through KFFL.com's fantasy baseball forums, this question caught my eye:

"In SEBL, we can keep one batter and one pitcher that were selected after the third round. If we keep a player, we forfeit our draft pick in the original round they were drafted. So, which of these two pitchers - both who were selected in the 16th round (meaning I would forfeit my 16th round pick) - would you keep:

Fantasy baseball and the AL Central playoff

tim-heaney-rounding-the-bases

Those who refuse to let go of this 2009 fantasy baseball season won't have to just yet. The Minnesota Twins and Detroit Tigers will clash in a one-game playoff Tuesday afternoon to determine the AL Central champ.

Guess what? Those stats will help determine many fantasy championships. Tap your mouse here for more »

Francisco Liriano, John Lackey, Mike MacDougal, Joba Chamberlain and more

Welcome to the Happy Hour edition of Rounding the Bases. Each week, Tim Heaney takes you around the majors with his spin on fantasy baseball trends, news highlights and player scouting. He welcomes you to join him as he circles the bags at his admirably slow pace.

Hmmm ... which avian parlance should I choose?

I'll go with the best cinematic equivalent from one of the more underrated sports movie sequels (about 1:24 in).

Hey, at least last night's winged plunkee got off easy.

Out of the box

2009 MLB predictions and awards

Derek Lowe started the season off the right way

Lowe started the season the right way

What a gem tossed by the Atlanta Braves' Derek Lowe, eh? Did anyone see that coming?

Self-promotion aside, forget Christmas: This is the most wonderful time of the year. Just in time for the true Opening Day, my predictions for the 2009 MLB season - the fruits of my (not very) thorough, (un)scientific labors. Fantasy Baseball Alert: Joe Mauer's Opening Day status doubtful

Don't count on Joe Mauer for Opening Day

Joe Mauer's injury alters the fantasy baseball landscape

As KFFL's latest Breaking News Analysis told you, Minnesota Twins catcher Joe Mauer probably won't be ready for Opening Day action.

Back problems for catchers don't bring a smile to my face. This pretty much drops him out of the top three catchers taken, and I'm not considering him unless he slips into the 10th round or so. Even then, eh.... Tap your mouse here for more »
