Fantasy football draft recap: Let others IDP freely

Patrick Willis, LB, San Francisco 49ers

Reach for "name" IDPs? No thanks

Pickers in Individual Defensive Player leagues that mix O and D often feel like getting the "best" commodities on the other side of the ball takes precedence over building depth at your traditional fantasy football positions.

Feel free to let other drafters keep thinking that while you take advantage of draft flow and a likely overflow of offensive values.

Starting Lineups:

QB, 2 RB, 3 WR, TE, Flex RB-WR-TE, PK

Continued my basic plan of loading up on as many RBs and WRs as possible before grabbing a midrange QB. Think it worked well, especially since I grabbed James Starks later on to account for Ryan Grant. We'll see how that goes. Tony G in Round 12? Sounds good to me.

These drafters didn't give in to temptation to draft too many elite IDPs. Remember, you can rotate these guys based on matchups. Even after waiting to build up my offensive bench, I snared an elite pass-rushing DL (sacks are worth three points in this format) and three tackle machines at LB. The first group is especially shallow, and you should look to grab an impact pass rusher from that group.

As unpredictable as sacks might be year to year, you should at least put yourself ahead of the curve there, especially if QB takedowns are amplified in your scoring system.

Reaching for the Patrick Willises of the world might seem appropriate in IDPs, but you're missing out on grabbing your preferences at the volatile skills positions. DBs are a dime for "every seven dozen," as colleague Nicholas Minnix put it yesterday. You can easily find a seven-tackle week from a safety depending on matchups. I didn't draft any defensive bench players.

Thoughts on the team? IDP strategy?

I tried to look at the results, but it wouldn't allow me to see them, says they are for a private league.  Help.
  • One place I like to stack up is at DL. I'm in a 6-person league (I know...), and I like to go DL before going for RB and WR depth. I cornered the market this year with Tuck, Allen, and Peppers and doing the math, I ought to average about a 10 point per game advantage each week over the other folks.
