Add Addison Reed to your fantasy baseball sleepers list

Matt Thornton, RP, Chicago White Sox

Thornton? Meh

The Chicago White Sox traded reliever Sergio Santos, their primary closer in 2011, to the Toronto Blue Jays today for Nestor Molina, an intriguing young arm. More on that here.

So what does this do for Chicago's saves sitch? Common knowledge could point to southpaw Matt Thornton, but he's involved in trade rumors and didn't exactly wow when given the reins last year.

Chris Sale looks like a potential rotation member. Jesse Crain is a nice candidate, as he has some late-innings experience. Either way, they're probably not going to sign a big name.

The ChiSox now have a chance to unearth a stopper, as they did with Santos. Enter Addison Reed, widely regarded as their future fireman. Why not the near future? This right-hander has Santos-like skills. The soon-to-be 23-year-old dazzled in limited MLB reps and mowed down minors bats.

Even if he doesn't get the role immediately, he could, like Santos, convince Robin Ventura over the course of the season that he's the best option. Reed stands on my VIP list of sleeper save targets for 2012.

Tim, in all fairness, I don't play fantasy baseball. I'm strictly a fantasy football guy, and once I remove the OCD ego-maniacal GM of my fantasy football limitations from the equation, I can see as someone who would want continuous FFB coverage 24/7, that not only was I wrong to question this, but I owe you an apology. As someone who tries to shed light for the rest of the fantasy world (who all crave opinions, regardless of what any of us may say), your counsel is something that your readers value and I was out of line calling you to task on this. I apologize, dude to dude. Keep up the good work, and may the fantasy gods be with you, 52 weeks out of the year!

  • LBrown, appreciate the comment. Do you play? If not, you'd be surprised how much baseball people eat up offseason content. If you do, we're doing our best to try to help you get a jump on information and leads for potential value. Again, thanks for reading, hope to have you back in the future.

Tim, just a question: baseball season ended with the world series about a month and a half ago. Fantasy baseball even a few weeks earlier. Are you going to continue to write fantasy baseball blogs all winter into the spring? Who do you think is still reading about fantasy baseball, especially when it's all speculative/opinion/blog? Fantasy baseball doesn't need two blogs a week written during the off-season. Just a thought.
