Fantasy baseball starting pitchers: the Frugal 15

Matt Moore, SP, Tampa Bay Rays

Moore won't be cheap ...

The Freshman 15 often bloats college students. The Frugal 15, however, gives fantasy baseball players some tasty treats without expanding their budget's waistline.

Last year I shared some of my favorite bargain starting pitchers. Not a bad gathering; I'll humble-brag that I hit on five of the nine listed.

On this year's initial cost-effective docket, I'm excluding hyped arms like Matt Moore and Yu Darvish. Time to aim higher but also deeper, complete with tiers. This is only the beginning of your SP value hunting, but it's a noteworthy jumping-off point.

Even more on why I took Starlin Castro in Round 3

Starlin Castro, SS, Chicago Cubs

All Starlin, all the time

Can't say I'm upset that people are still talking about my Starlin Castro pick in Round 3 of last Monday's 13-team, 29-round Fantasy Sports Trade Association MLB experts draft from Las Vegas. (No such thing as bad press, right?)

Some found it surprising. Some reminded us of the risk.

Castro, this year, is worth the chance. The capable skills he has shown heading into his age-22 season already place him well ahead of most shortstops out there. The raw dollar valuation - his five-category contribution - puts him at an advantage on its own. Tap your mouse here for more »

FSTA fantasy baseball draft results: Guess not everything stays in Vegas

Starlin Castro, SS, Chicago Cubs

Seeing Starlin?

This is my first true work day of the week, at least in terms of KFFL day-to-day stuff. From Monday to Wednesday, I joined GM Ryan Bonini at the Fantasy Sports Trade Association's annual conference at Las Vegas.

Strangely enough, I didn't make my usual trip to the blackjack tables. The only gambles I took in Sin City came at the mic during karaoke (inquire within for more) and at the draft table Monday for the gathering's MLB experts selections, which was broadcasted by the ever-talented Sirius XM Fantasy Sports Radio team.

(Shamefulless plug: KFFL is lucky enough to run things on Sirius 210/XM 87 Wednesday nights from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. ET).

This 13-team, 29-round face-off (including defending champ and FSWA award winner Ray Flowers from Sirius) is one of the earliest single-year, for-realsies pick 'em parties in the industry. There are no trades in this weekly-lineup, standard 5x5 mixed rotisserie format, which alters draft strategies for many. Tap your mouse here for more »

Who’s your No. 1 fantasy baseball pick?

Matt Kemp, OF, Los Angeles Dodgers

Kemp, or the field?

Congrats to KFFL Baseball buddy Scott Gilroy for his correct guess of Justin Smoak in our final Guess The Sleeper contest. (Follow Scott. He knows his stuff.)

But ... enough with the games. Let's do this.

I've procured the No. 2 selection in the Fantasy Sports Trade Association's MLB experts draft, my first real deal of 2012, next Monday night at The Mirage in Las Vegas at the annual FSTA conference! Tap your mouse here for more »

Time for the next round of Guess the Fantasy Baseball Sleeper

Dexter Fowler, OF, Colorado Rockies

Last time, it was Fowler

Congrats to master Tweeter @cmattmetric for correctly tabbing Dexter Fowler as the last correct answer to Guess the Fantasy Baseball Sleeper! Come on, is someone gonna outdo him this time? He's in the lead with a perfect two correct answers out of two queries!

Let's do another one. Our first entry of this contest in 2012, though, has a conditional tag on him. Tap your mouse here for more »

Ready for another round of Guess the Fantasy Baseball Sleeper?

Time for another round of Guess the Fantasy Baseball Sleeper. Did you correctly guess the last one?

Rotophile friends of KFFL Baseball @Rotodaddy and @Stevempars, along with reader @cmattmetric, correctly called out Zack Cozart as our first mystery impact player! They are hereby awesome.

Don't worry. You still have a chance to play on Facebook or Twitter. Tap your mouse here for more »

Can you name this 2012 fantasy baseball sleeper?

You can catch Keith Hernandez, Nicholas Minnix and me in the USA Today Fantasy Baseball magazine, due out on stands in early 2012.

I'll be penning an article on breakout players in 2012. You should buy the rag. But I'm going to give a quick teaser for one of my inclusions because, frankly, I'm becoming more and more excited about him the more I examine him. Tap your mouse here for more »

An early fantasy baseball mock draft, complete with Ryan Braun

Ryan Braun, OF, Milwaukee Brewers

Where did Braun go?

Last night Nicholas Minnix and I participated in the USA Today Fantasy Baseball magazine mock, which you can find on newsstands in early 2012.

I'll refrain from publishing the full results so you can grab the rag, but here's my team, which was compiled from the second overall pick in this traditional 5x5 mixed 15-team serpentine: Tap your mouse here for more »

Trevor Cahill swap, a.k.a. Statistics vs. Scouting: Round … well, I’ve lost count

Trevor Cahill, SP, Oakland Athletics

Cahill worth it?

You want me to speak?

When I point at you, yeah.

OK, my turn.

I guess Billy Beane is riding high off the success of the Moneyball movie - well, as high as the Oakland Athletics would set him up to do. He just fleeced Kevin Towers' Arizona Diamondbacks in bringing the talented Jarrod Parker to the Oakland Athletics.

We'll have more on this deal in Monday's Fantasy Baseball Hot Stove, but here's a rant to tide you over. Tap your mouse here for more »

Add Addison Reed to your fantasy baseball sleepers list

Matt Thornton, RP, Chicago White Sox

Thornton? Meh

The Chicago White Sox traded reliever Sergio Santos, their primary closer in 2011, to the Toronto Blue Jays today for Nestor Molina, an intriguing young arm. More on that here.

So what does this do for Chicago's saves sitch? Common knowledge could point to southpaw Matt Thornton, but he's involved in trade rumors and didn't exactly wow when given the reins last year. Tap your mouse here for more »
