Fantasy baseball players adore Kansas City Royals’ Eric Hosmer, but Mike Moustakas is more attractive
Don't get me wrong. Eric Hosmer is handsome. He looked better without facial hair, but his intense eyes and chiseled chin help to form the haunting mug that furnishes his dreaminess, which an indeterminately large portion of the ladies must appreciate.
Mike Moustakas is no ugly duckling, but he has nothing on his teammate. He has a by-gosh, D.B. Sweeney thing going on that appeals to no greater than a small faction of females. But if these babes are shallow, they've done their homework: He makes decent coin, and his earnings potential is ginormous.
In a charity date auction, Moustakas can't compete with Hosmer. In a rotisserie auction, the former has the goods, but even the depthless dames are disinclined to dabble. Damn, that's cold.

Angling for Lance Berkman
Most of the reasons that I was wary of drafting Lance Berkman stick with me, although the shine has worn off some of them because of his .344-11-34 start to 2011. Thus, in hindsight, I was simply dismissive of his ability to turn a profit when the price was just too damn good not to toss him into one of my fantasy baseball shopping carts as I strolled into the checkout lane.
I still have strong doubts about his chances at keeping up his first-quarter pace. A trade offer I received, not the St. Louis Cardinals slugger's recent mini-slump, is what prompted me to ponder this (although I suppose the recent tough stretch makes the prognostication look smart in the moment).
That's the trouble with fantasy sports.

Two first sackers? Don’t be-LABR the roto points
Back from LABR weekend in sunny Phoenix, also the de facto hub of the Cactus League. Incredibly fun AL auction on Saturday evening - great people, tough players.
(Sirius/XM Fantasy Sports Radio broadcasted both the AL and NL events live - and later replayed them - so that roto addicts could get a feel for how the auctions unfolded. You can download PDFs of the results.)
I bought Adrian Gonzalez very early. Not a bad place to start, right? About five or 10 minutes later, my roster housed Miguel Cabrera, too. I certainly wasn't displeased.

Concussed Canadians Justin Morneau, Jason Bay headed in opposite directions

No more Morneau, please, for now
The last few days have been uncomfortable for Minnesota Twins fans. Their chattering teeth aren't a result of temperatures that dipped below 0 degrees; the weather hasn't helped, but Midwesterners are tough. What's really making them nervous: The latest news on their star slugger, Justin Morneau, was supposed to be encouraging ... but it really wasn't.
The empathy will trickle down to fantasy baseball players and mock drafts and columns any day now. Or, at any rate, it should. It's interesting that the optimism surrounding Morneau's fantasy outlook not long ago didn't seem suitable for Jason Bay. In fact, the latter is a considerably more attractive fantasy choice.

Boston Red Sox closing deal with San Diego Padres for Adrian Gonzalez – updated (again)

The Boston Red Sox have reached an agreement that will bring 1B Adrian Gonzalez to Boston from the San Diego Padres, reports SI.com's Jon Heyman. The two sides are still ironing out some details, but there will be a press conference tomorrow to announce the deal.
The prospects remain the same. The Padres will receive P Casey Kelly, 1B Anthony Rizzo, OF Reymond Fuentes and a player to be named later. Boston is expected to add seven years at around $23 million per year to Gonzalez's deal, on top of the $6 million he will receive in 2011. However, no agreement is official yet.

How fantasy baseball sweet is it to be Victor Martinez in Motown? And Derek Jeter’s looking glass
Now that the Detroit Tigers have signed Victor Martinez, who'll be their regular DH but in 2011 will have catcher eligibility, fantasy baseball managers will be salivating. Visions of his 2007 and 2009 campaigns might be dancing in their heads.

Who's doing the navigating?
Who else on the club would earn at-bats at DH? Miguel Cabrera, occasionally? It is an enticing fantasy baseball situation, based on the individual outlook. But what about other circumstances? The Tigers seem primed to take a bit of a tumble, barring some splashes, and perhaps even with.

With two left feet, the Baltimore Orioles dance the Fox trot

I don't think this is what Nick Markakis had in mind when, publicly, he lamented the Baltimore Orioles' woeful approach at the plate and urged the club to take a smarter path - in many ways.
The O's completed with the Oakland Athletics a trade for notorious hacker Jake Fox. The move that likely spells doom for Garrett Atkins, according to multiple team observers.

Absolutely FAABulous: Smoak him if you got him

Texas Rangers first baseman Justin Smoak was the most hotly contested FAAB acquisition of the week in Tout Wars (mixed standings).
Well, maybe not hotly contested so much as highly coveted; the sizes of competing bids varied, with a few (including my own) comprising more than one-third of yearly budgets.

A former football star and fantasy player whose back no longer holds him back
Todd H. has had himself one heck of a rebound campaign. Physical maladies, most notably those related to his back, seemed to have drained him before this season, but he has instead worked hard to overcome them. Fantasy owners who took a chance on him have been handsomely rewarded.
What an inspiring performance. The seasoned vet who has donned black and purple for his entire career hasn't posted the gaudy numbers we used to take for granted, but he's easily a starter for most fantasy teams. That doesn't impress you? Considering what folks paid for him or when they drafted him, the return on their investment has been nothing but profit. Tap your mouse here for more »
