Marking time for mouthwatering Dayan Viciedo
A couple of days ago, Chicago White Sox GM Kenny Williams certainly gained the attention of fantasy baseball players when he expounded on the subject of Dayan Viciedo during his conversation with MLB.com.
"It would be awfully interesting to have him in this lineup," Williams told the Web site. "He's ready. He's obviously got some things he still needs to work on, but I would have no qualms about bringing him here."
Agreed: It would be awfully interesting. Scoop him up in a mixed league. A slugging outfielder, with third-base eligibility, in this day and age? It's just that ...
"Ozzie [Guillen] is not ready to change the mix he has right now, and that has to be respected," Williams also conceded.

From the muddy John Danks of the Chicago
When you drafted John Danks, did you have any idea that it was then his duty to completely drain you?
It took the Chicago White Sox's hurler 12 starts to record his first victory of 2011. He has a 4.75 ERA, a 1.47 WHIP and 52 strikeouts in 77 2/3 innings.
Danks slipped the straps of his Grape Ape backpack off his shoulders on Monday with a great line against the Seattle Mariners: 7 1/3 IP, 1 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 6 K, 0 HR.
Slap an asterisk on that start, next to "Seattle Mariners"?* Or is this outing enough on which to begin restoring fantasy baseball players' faith?

Sergio Santos awaits chance from fantasy baseball players, not Ozzie Guillen
I put in a bid for Sergio Santos in mixed Tout Wars this past Sunday, but I didn't get him because I landed both of my top priorities, Matt Harrison and Desmond Jennings. In hindsight, maybe I should've rearranged.
Maybe I was too hot to trot for Jennings. Maybe Harrison won't pan out the way I expect. I don't regret either of those moves, though, because I think the upside is worth the risk. If not, at least I learned something.
Really, it just would've been nice to have another roster spot available for Santos.

The Chicago White Sox's pursuit of excellence, and the San Diego Padres' lack of recognition for it

The Chicago White Sox have become a model that trades like a big-market club, spends like an upper-class mid-market club and stocks like a small-market franchise with little money invested in player development. In short, they have no mission.

From Prince to emperor? Keep the clothes
The rumor that they may attempt to acquire Prince Fielder from the Milwaukee Brewers does little but reinforce that assessment. Kenny Williams isn't afraid to pull the trigger. Ozzie Guillen: "If Kenny thinks we need somebody, he will get it."

The sabermetaphysicist … and why do you still own Josh Hamilton?

Yesterday, I began reading a couple of compelling articles by the same writer about a pitcher we mutually admire. Each of us had extremely high expectations for this pitcher.

Hamilton's warranty doesn't cover parts
The writer and I have huevos on our faces. I'd hoped to find company with whom I could share my misery. I was disappointed. At least by the graf that was supposed to hook me. I don't discount the theories offered, but I don't agree with the assertions.

How much is a CC Sabathia-note worth? And will Jake Peavy please put a Sox in it?

A slow start for my Tout Wars ace, CC Sabathia? Happens that way for him every year, right? He's turning it around, slowly but surely, isn't he? Back-to-back W's, 15 K's and four walks in 14 innings... It's a snap.
Four of CC's six wins (including that last pair) have come against the Baltimore Orioles. He has a 2.73 ERA and 1.25 WHIP against them.
Sabathia's average fastball velocity has been up and down. The burly southpaw has yet to experience injurious fallout (as in, an injury) from his buildup of seasons of 230-plus innings, at least. Is he hiding one? Is he fatigued?

Kerry Wood, closer? Dice-K, control freak? Starlin Castro, fantasy baseball sensation?
Would you have moved Kerry Wood into the closer role yet?

What Wood you do?
A couple of days ago, Cleveland Indians manager Manny Acta said that Wood passed the final test - pitching on back-to-back days, while throwing strikes - in his return journey to the back end of the Tribe's bullpen.
Wood's 2010 workload: two games (2 IP) in spring training; catch, bullpen sessions, simulated games; two minor league games (1 2/3 IP) - the first, awful; two major league games (1 IP) - the first, a mixed bag.

LABR a little, make a fantasy baseball trade: How I picked up potential saves

I don't often trade this early in the season. But this past weekend, in the League of Alternative Baseball Reality, a league mate e-mailed all us owners with a feeler. It piqued my interest.

Feliz stands in my way
On the block: Frank Francisco and Kevin Gregg. I purchased only one closer in the LABR auction a month and a half ago. His name: Kerry Wood.
Jake Peavy rejects White Sox

I don't blame Jake Peavy. I wouldn't want anything to do with the White Sox either. He would've moved from PETCO Park (the most pitcher-friendly park in baseball) to U.S. Cellular Field (one of the worst).

Jake Peavy: I'll wash my Pale Hose in the San Diego Harbor, thanks
I've heard a few positive opinions on his fantasy prospects if he were to move from the Gaslamp to the South Side of Chicago, and I don't buy it. The perception is that the White Sox would offer him more support than the Padres do, which would offset any decline in performance caused by the move to the AL and away from PETCO.
