Spring training gives way to unrealistic optimism
The official date for pitchers and catchers to report to their spring complexes is less than a week away. Fantasy baseball players and fans can already start rejoicing, though, because many high-profile players have reported early to get in some extra work.
Three pitchers and some Vladdy
Before the season started, I was touting Vladimir Guerrero as an undervalued aging veteran. If you bought into it, you are thanking me now.
35-year-old Vladdy Daddy has put up a .336 batting average, 18 homers and 68 RBIs, and we're not even at the All-Star break! Hallelujah!
What's even more amazing is that he already has more home runs, RBIs, walks (20) and stolen bases (4) than he did in his final season with the Halos.
MLB Makeovers: The AL West
I can't think of another division in baseball that has changed more considerably this offseason than the American League West. I barely recognize some of these clubs anymore, most notably the Seattle Mariners. It should be very interesting to see if the M's, Rangers or Athletics can knock the Angels from their AL West throne in 2010.
While the gap between the Angels and the others in the West has shrunk, there is no shortage of fantasy talent to be found there.
Past their prime? Not so fast
With Spring Training roughly five weeks away, it's time for you fantasy baseball fanatics to start prepping for your 2010 drafts (if you haven't done so already).
No doubt Albert Pujols, Hanley Ramirez and Alex Rodriguez are the cream of the fantasy position-player crop again this year. But who will be the aging veteran that bounces back for a surprise year (the Russell Branyan of the 2010 season, if you will)?
