More fantasy football sleepers

We're almost there, folks! The NFL season starts a week from today, and fantasy football owners couldn't be more jazzed. A lot of fantasy drafts will transpire this weekend, and you can target some of these deep sleepers late in your selection process.

I've written about Colt McCoy, John Beck, Eric Decker and Brian Robiskie being a few of my favorites ... here are a few more players to consider.

Rex Grossman, QB, Washington Redskins

Rex Grossman, quarterback, Washington Redskins

For as much as I like Beck, Grossman may be just as good and perhaps better. The 'Skins have enough of receiving options for him, and he knows the system sufficiently to excel later in the year once chemistry is at its strongest. Draft Grossman as a third QB in deep leagues.

Kendall Hunter, running back, San Francisco 49ers

The rookie hasn't surpassed Anthony Dixon just yet, but you know that when Frank Gore goes down (it's basically an annual event at this point), Hunter will be called on to mix it up and play a third-down role. I like him in PPR leagues as a sixth flier back.

Jerome Harrison, running back, Detroit Lions

It is conceivable that Harrison touches the ball in excess of 120 times this year with Mikel Leshoure (Achilles') out for the year and Jahvid Best (concussion) appearing to be injury-prone. I'm stashing Harrison in every league I can get my hands on him. He is a fifth or sixth back in standard leagues, and he should get some love in PPR affairs as well.

Bernard Scott, running back, Cincinnati Bengals

He probably isn't as deep of a sleeper as the rest of the guys on this list, but casual fans may not be familiar with his potential in Cincy's new West Coast offense. Scott is going to see a lot of work out of the backfield, and a rookie quarterback will rely on him abundantly as a checkdown. He's a fourth fantasy back in PPR leagues and could be worth much more down the stretch since the Bengals may want to see if he can replace Cedric Benson, who is on a one-year deal.

Early Doucet, wide receiver, Arizona Cardinals

Everyone seems to be focusing on Andre Roberts, who is technically the starter ahead of Doucet, but there will be plenty of passing in the desert. Doucet is healthy and has shown flashes of his former self. He is a crafty route runner and sits in holes in zone coverage because of his awareness. Sounds good, huh? Temper your expectations, though, and draft him as nothing more than a sixth fantasy wideout.

Earl Bennett, WR, Chicago Bears

Earl Bennett, wide receiver, Chicago Bears

I have a sinking suspicion we will see far more of Bennett than anyone expects. He knows all three spots at the position and has locked up the slot role in an offense that often goes three-wide. Bennett has chemistry with Jay Cutler from their time together in college, and Roy Williams has been a chump most of his career. Take a chance on him as a fifth receiver.

Lance Kendricks, tight end, St. Louis Rams

My gut tells me he won't amount to anything fantasy-wise in 2011, but Kendricks has been so good this preseason it is tough to ignore him. The Rams' offense isn't likely to use the position much, if Josh McDaniels' history is any indication, but that doesn't mean he has not evolved with the talent he has to work with. Kendricks isn't draftable in leagues with 16-player rosters, however.

Fred Davis, tight end, Washington Redskins

Chris Cooley's knee remains inflamed and could hamper him early in the year (possibly all season long). Davis has been dynamic in short stretches of his young career. This offense likes to utilize the position in the passing game, and a lack of overwhelming talent in the receiving corps could lead to more tight end involvement - even with Cooley is at full speed. Stash Davis in leagues with 18-plus-player rosters.
