Daniel Thomas will be the cream of the rookie crop

I can't get enough of Miami Dolphins rookie running back Daniel Thomas in my early drafts. Ricky Williams was an elite choice last time I cared about any fantasy football commodity in South Florida.

At 6-foot, 230 pounds, the likely new starter in Miami is a load to bring down. Additionally, his hands are well above average and will keep him on field on third downs.

Ronnie Brown isn't expected to return to the team, and Williams is hardly a threat at 34 years old. Lex Hilliard and Kory Sheets round out the running back corps, with Patrick Cobbs scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent.

Daniel Thomas, RB, Miami Dolphins

The Dolphins bolstered their offensive line with the first-round selection of center Mike Pouncey, who should start immediately.

Thomas was a stout performer at K-State, averaging 5.1 and 5.3 yards per carry, respectively, the past two seasons. The former Wildcat has a nose for the end zone with 30 trips across the stripe in this time (19 in 2010). Also a competent receiver, Thomas' hands and blocking ability will go a long way in preventing competition for touches from beating him out.

The Dolphins may not use the wildcat formation like they had in years past, but Thomas has experience running the system in college.

Thomas is a third running back in fantasy leagues and has the potential for much greater if the quarterback play in Miami is even average. The Dolphins have enough overall talent on that side of the ball to take pressure off the rook, just as long as the passing game isn't a total liability.

isnt this what everyone thought about Ryan Matthew last year if you have to waste a high pick on Thomas your begging to be dissappointed take a proven player who knows there teams playbook or atleast have your draft closer to opening day

  • Cory J. Bonini

DC – One key difference is that Miami offensive coordinator Brian Daboll is committed to being balanced, unlike Norv Turner. A big reason why Mathews struggled last year was his lack of mental fortitude.

Thomas is going, on average, in the eighth round, whereas Mathews was generally a third- or fourth-rounder last year.

I had Thomas rated as my top RB for the “1st Round Rookie Fantasy Drafts” .

I had Thomas rated as the best Rookie RB in the early Fantasy Drafts.

Ahh thank you for the explanation it seems every year a couple guys tend to be overvalued based on physical skills as opposed to actual production, I wouldn’t be surprised if Thomas did well my real point should have been I’ll avoid rookies in general because of how like ota and mini camps they will get. That being said I like Leshoure and Helu also to pobbibly be key contributors when fantasy playoffs come around

Cory, I don’t think I’ve ever heard someone use Norv Turner as a reason for a running back to have not performed well.  I believe most people normally attribute a back’s success TO Turner.

  • Cory J. Bonini

Have you watched the Chargers play in the last two years? I would never have thought I would make that comment five years ago, but his play-calling has changed considerably in recent years.

  • Sweet Daddy

You don’t think underperforming line play and backs that can’t break runs or are constantly injured affected those choices?

  • Cory J. Bonini

Of course it had something to it, but Norv has been too enamored with Rivers to Jackson and Gates and has outright abandoned the ground game at time.

[...] I figured I could take a chance on Daniel Thomas as my third back. I'm expecting the rookie to be the leading man in Miami with Ronnie Brown out the door. There is plenty of reason to like the former K-State halfback. [...]
