Fantasy football busts: RB - Week 13

by Tim Heaney on December 2, 2010 @ 11:47:25 PDT

In this article KFFL breaks down fantasy football busts of the week. Some high-level players will be included, because you need to know when is time to sit a player even though it may not seem appropriate. Primarily, however, we will address the midrange to low-end fantasy options that you rack your brain over each week. Read on to learn which of these players that you wouldn't want in your lineup.

Note: All statistical averages are from Week 9 to Week 12, unless otherwise specified.

Fantasy football busts: Running backs

Fred Jackson, Buffalo Bills at Minnesota Vikings

Fantasy value: Midrange No. 3

    Buffalo Bills RB Fred Jackson
F-Jax about to hit the wall
  • Jackson has taken the lead for the Bills' backfield in the last month, averaging 81.0 rushing yards, 4.75 receptions, 43.5 receiving yards and 1.50 offensive scores per contest.
  • Despite showing some fleeting vulnerability, the Vikes remain a strong defense against opposing carries, giving up just 55.0 rushing yards, 3.50 catches and 22.3 receiving yards per game to the position. Running backs haven't scored an offensive touchdown against Minnesota.
  • Buffalo expects C.J. Spiller (hamstring) to return for Week 13, meaning he'll at least chip away at some of Jackson's utilizations.

LeGarrette Blount, Tampa Bay Buccaneers vs. Atlanta Falcons

Fantasy value: Midrange No. 3

  • Blount, Tampa's majority back, has averaged 68.5 rushing yards and 0.25 touchdowns per game. Most of his success came against the Carolina Panthers (19-91-1) and San Francisco 49ers (28-82-0), but he was stuffed by the Baltimore Ravens last week (13-55-0) and ... the Falcons in Week 9 (13-46-0).
  • The Falcons have been stalwarts against opposing backs with just 52.0 rushing yards allowed, along with holding the position out of the end zone. Atlanta has contained the Bucs, Baltimore Ravens, St. Louis Rams and Green Bay Packers in that time.
  • The Bucs will probably test Atlanta more often through the air, given their more vulnerable pass coverage and their ability to stop Blount last time out.

NEW - Brian Westbrook, San Francisco 49ers at Green Bay Packers

Fantasy value: Midrange No. 3

  • Frank Gore's fractured hip ended his season, and Westy should be added in all formats. Flashbacks to 2007, right? Well, Westbrook (ankle) already had to sit out Wednesday's practice. The Niners say it was just precautionary given how much the 31-year-old played Monday night. With his injury history, don't let him off the hook. Maybe his timeshare with Anthony Dixon will actually benefit him, but that's one reason to detract from Westbrook's value.
  • Unfortunately for Westy, the Packers aren't the Arizona Cardinals, whom he decimated Monday night. Though Westbrook might benefit from the Packers' allowance of 4.67 catches and 40.0 receiving yards per game to opposing backs, Green Bay has allowed averages of just 77.0 ground yards and 0.33 offense touchdowns.
