Second basemen

Orlando Hudson, Los Angeles Dodgers

The seesaw at second continues for the Dodgers. Ronnie Belliard (groin) has missed the last two days after injuring himself Monday. While Hudson's three-game hit streak has produced uninspiring numbers, he could offer vital at-bats for a middle infield spot down the stretch. Keep tabs on Belliard's situation, though, because he'd probably return to starting if he's OK.

Mike Fontenot, Chicago Cubs

Per manager Lou Piniella, starting third baseman Aramis Ramirez (shoulder) will probably only be able to play "sparingly" down the stretch, if he isn't shut down for the rest of '09. This would give Jeff Baker more chances at third.

Fontenot started at second base Tuesday and would be the likely beneficiary for the last handful of games. The streaky left-handed bat has hit .316 in 38 September at-bats but hasn't done much in terms of run production.

Shortstops

Reid Brignac, Tampa Bay Rays

Tampa is giving Brignac a shot

Brignac should get a few more trips in the starting lineup before the season is out. He went 2-for-3 in place of shorty Jason Bartlett last night. He probably won't carry you to victory, especially with his poor batting eye. On the other hand, you can keep the post-hypee on roster if you need fill-in plate appearances for your middle infield spot.

Starting pitchers

Matt Palmer, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

As the Halos continue to rest their starting rotation, Palmer will toe the first-inning rubber Wednesday at home against the Texas Rangers. Palmer hasn't been the most stable starter for the Angels (4.99 ERA despite his 8-1 record).

He has excelled since June, though, with a 2.81 ERA in his last 26 appearances, including one start, which came all the way back on July 25. Starting him is a pretty desperate move, but it could yield moderate results; the Rangers' road offense is spotty.
