Batters

Jarrod Dyson and Jason Bourgeois, OF, Kansas City Royals

Richards blocked for now

Ned Yost didn't cement a replacement arrangement but outlined his expectations: "We've got some options because we've got a right-handed hitter in Bourgeois, we've got left-handed hitters in Maier and Dyson. I like Maier coming off the bench a little more, and with Dyson's ability to roam the outfield - and he's off to a great start in Triple-A - we'll use him a lot out there."

He implies Dyson, promoted to take Cain's roster spot, would get the first shot, with Maier fitting in as a complementary player. Dyson's hot start at Omaha includes a concerted effort to put the ball on the ground in order to maximize his elite speed.

Bourgeois, acquired when Kansas City traded catcher Humberto Quintero, has similar one-trick abilities but would get the short end of a platoon setup; at least that gives him a more defined role than Maier, who's merely single-universe fodder as long as he's third on this short-term totem pole.

Dyson and Bourgeois are aggressive thieves who, even if they split playing time, could be handy two-week contributors in the stolen-base column. Of course, groin strains often create tricky and prolonged recoveries. Easter has passed, but hunting for rabbits will always at least mildly intrigue fantasy owners.

Pitchers

Jerome Williams, SP, Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim

After proving he's healthy in two minor league rehab appearances (3.27 ERA, nine K's and one walk in 11 frames), Williams was named the Halos' fifth starter; he'll start against the New York Yankees on Sunday. Prospect Garrett Richards will remain at Triple-A Salt Lake.

Williams' September performance in 2011 (2.93 ERA in 27 2/3 innings) brought him into Anaheim's good graces. The 30-year-old ground-ball inducer, however, is hardly a dominant arm, despite showing a notable velocity increase in his first MLB action in four years.

He's useful but hardly bankable. Richards would get the call if Williams falters or another injury opens up. For short-term contributions, Williams will eat AL-only innings, but betting on Richards taking the gig eventually isn't reckless.
