Mound meetings
- Following up on yesterday's Jonathan Broxton noise: The Los Angeles Dodgers' closer (for how long?) said Don Mattingly and Rick Honeycutt like the way he has been throwing but want him to be more aggressive and throw more split-finger fastballs.
While this might provide an avenue for him to work around his declining velocity, it won't be a cure-all unless Broxton makes serious progress in his approach. At this point in the season, he can't do the same for his conditioning, which already counts as a strike against him. His hot seat remains sizzling.
- With help from two outstanding plays from right fielder Brent Lillibridge, Sergio Santos recorded a two-out Tuesday save, his second in as many days for the Chicago White Sox. Matt Thornton actually was the first called upon after Gavin Floyd handed the ball to Ozzie Guillen early in the ninth; Thornton retired lefty bat Curtis Granderson, who sacrificed, and issued a one-out walk before being replaced by Santos.
Ozzie stopped short of dubbing Santos the stopper, and there might be situations with one or more lefties due up when he'll turn to Thornton or Sale. But Santos remains in the lead.
