Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat - NL

by Tim Heaney on July 28, 2010 @ 14:35:00 PDT

In fantasy baseball, the closer position remains volatile. Rarely does every closer hang on to the job for an entire season - injuries, poor performance and managerial decisions can cloud a team's bullpen picture.

Should you be concerned about a struggling stopper? Which relievers are climbing the depth chart? Are any injuries popping up?'s Fantasy Baseball Closer Hot Seat keeps you informed when you're looking for saves.

Mound meetings

  • Washington Nationals RP Matt Capps
    Still quietly Capps 'em off
Colorado Rockies stopper Huston Street (abdomen) was diagnosed with an abdominal contusion after being hit in the lower right abdomen by a line drive during batting practice Tuesday. He's day-to-day.
Manuel Corpas is the best bet to fill in for the interim. If you haven't already, you could pick him up in mixed leagues for a few save chances and be ready to ditch him once Street comes back.
  • The Los Angeles Dodgers saw Jonathan Broxton (illness) record their Tuesday save. The righty needed just 10 pitches to work through a scoreless ninth, his first outing since Saturday. He even struck out San Diego Padres outfielder Matt Stairs, his longtime postseason tormentor.
All 10 of J-Brox's offerings were fastballs, and all were 95 mph or faster. It looks like his brief break helped him reboot his velocity and settle his stomach.
  • For all the times he was smacked around this year, Octavio Dotel hasn't walked a batter in his last 11 games (10 1/3 innings). He has a 2.61 ERA and seven saves in that time.
Still, the trade watch continues. If Dotel leaves the Pittsburgh Pirates, one report says Evan Meek and Joel Hanrahan would split closer duties until the better option emerged. The Bucs aren't moving either of those two unless they're wowed by an offer.
  • In front of countless fans disappointed by missing out on Stephen Strasburg, Matt Capps wrapped up a Washington Nationals win nonetheless. Capps, who still has trade rumors swirling around him, has 25 saves, easily on pace to set his career high. He has a 1.53 ERA, a 1.02 WHIP and 12 K's over his last 18 games (17 2/3 innings).
