Fantasy baseball waivers and discarded fantasy baseball players can make or break a season. You may have adjusted your fantasy baseball cheat sheets over and over during spring training. If your team remains the same after opening day, though, you will probably have trouble competing in your rotisserie baseball league. When is it time to give up on your fantasy baseball sleepers? Which players are worth retaining? KFFL.com's Diamond Market series gives you the fantasy baseball tips and advice you need to sort through the masses quickly.

Key

Discard - Drop player (in most circumstances)

Stash - Hold player if roster space is available; consider dropping if trend continues

Hold - Do not drop player (in most circumstances)

Second Basemen

Third Basemen

Chipper Jones, Atlanta Braves

Chipper (shoulder) is scheduled to have an MRI Tuesday, Sept. 30, and hopes to hear that there's nothing structurally wrong with his shoulder. He's expected to be limited to pinch-hitting duty for the final few games of 2008.

Shallow mixed: Discard

Deep mixed: Discard

NL-only: Discard

Shortstops

None

Outfielders

Willy Taveras, Colorado Rockies

Taveras (leg) has apparently been experiencing soreness in his right leg for weeks. It turns out that he has a stress fracture in his tibia, and he won't play again this season. The cause of the injury is unknown, but the fantasy owner's cause takes precedence.

Shallow mixed: Discard

Deep mixed: Discard

NL-only: Discard

Designated Hitters

None

Starting Pitchers

Edinson Volquez, Cincinnati Reds

Volquez (knee) has been pitching through soreness in his knee for the past few weeks. He soldiered on Wednesday, Sept. 24, by dominating the Houston Astros for 7 1/3 innings; he allowed six hits and an earned run while fanning nine. Unfortunately, it's the last start the 2008 breakout star will make this year.

Shallow mixed: Discard

Deep mixed: Discard

NL-only: Discard

Andy Pettitte, New York Yankees

Yankees manager Joe Girardi pushed Pettitte (shoulder) back a day so that he could pitch the final game at Yankee Stadium, a contest in which he netted a victory. The southpaw is a beloved Bronx figure, so the ending was fitting, but it turns out that he has been trotting out there every fifth day despite soreness in his shoulder. An MRI showed no structural damage, but he won't make his last start of 2008.

Shallow mixed: Discard

Deep mixed: Discard

AL-only: Discard

Relief Pitchers

None
