Fantasy football sleepers: Tight ends
Kevin Boss, New York Giants at Dallas Cowboys
Fantasy value: Midrange No. 1
Boss in for a big week?
|
- Reminding the Giants of his presence in an unsettled receiving group, Boss totaled 62 yards on three catches (20.7 yards per grab) in the season opener. Boss has a chance to stand out, especially with the recent injury to wideout Hakeem Nicks (foot).
- The Cowboys had trouble suppressing this position in their opener, allowing six grabs for 85 yards to the position.
- Boss' familiarity against Dallas should help, but he hasn't done much outside of a 3-30-1 performance against them in Week 9 of the '08 campaign.
NEW - Zach Miller, Oakland Raiders at Kansas City Chiefs
Fantasy value: High-end No. 1
- The sure-handed Miller caught all six of his targets and totaled 96 yards against the San Diego Chargers. Even though San Diego has been notoriously weak against the position dating back to early last season, Miller's 16.0 yards-per-reception average is quite impressive. To the benefit of fantasy owners, quarterback JaMarcus Russell zeroes in on Miller and doesn't utilize his receivers as much as he should.
- KC didn't fare so well against Baltimore Ravens' tight ends in Week 1 by giving up five catches for 74 yards and a score.
NEW - Todd Heap, Baltimore Ravens at San Diego Chargers
Fantasy value: High-end No. 1
- Quarterback Joe Flacco seems to have matured as a passer over the offseason, and he took advantage of Heap's receiving ability in Week 1 (5-74-1) against the Kansas City Chiefs.
- A healthy Heap has been a productive Heap throughout his career. He has scored in his only two meetings against the Chargers, but this brings us back to 2003 and 2004, so we don't put much weight into it.
- Against the Oakland Raiders last week, San Diego gave up seven catches for 109 yards to the position but kept the enemy tight ends from crossing the stripe. Zach Miller, whose skill set is similar to Heap's, caught six balls for 96 yards in Week 1.
