Fantasy football sleepers: DT - Week 3

Fantasy football sleepers: Defensive teams

Cincinnati Bengals vs. Pittsburgh Steelers

Fantasy value: Strong No. 1

  • The much-improved Bengals D - well, defensive end Antwan Odom, specifically - surprised the Green Bay Packers in Week 2 with a moderately effective defense. Cincy totaled six sacks while grabbing a turnover; Odom recorded 5.0 sacks.
  • The Steelers by no means offer great protection for their signal caller, Ben Roethlisberger, whose 46 sacks taken was the second highest total in the league last year. He has already been brought down six times in two games, which is tied for the fifth most collapses in the NFL. Pittsburgh also has allowed 1.50 interceptions per game (tied for sixth most) and lost 1.00 fumbles per game (tied for fourth most).
  • You should consider adding Cincy in deep leagues; they have potential to start some weeks depending on the matchup. Despite the chance to be penalized for points allowed, this is one of those instances.

St. Louis Rams vs. Green Bay Packers

Fantasy value: Strong No. 1

  • Green Bay's O-line has seen its fair share of worrisome signs to open this season. Despite not turning the ball over much, they have yielded the most sacks per game (5.00) to opposing defenses.
  • The Rams did well against conservative Washington Redskins quarterback Jason Campbell last week. They're actually averaging 1.00 picks per game (tied for the 11th most) and 1.00 fumble scoops per contest (tied for fifth) so far in '09.
  • Like our Detroit Lions recommendation last week, this last-ditch recommendation would be best used for leagues that don't penalize much - or anything - for high yardage and/or scoring production allowed.
