Fantasy football busts: QB | RB | WR | TE | PK | DT

In this article KFFL breaks down fantasy football busts of the week. Some high-level players will be included, because you need to know when is time to sit a player even though it may not seem appropriate. Primarily, however, we will address the midrange to low-end fantasy options that you rack your brain over each week. Read on to learn which of these players that you wouldn't want in your lineup.

Note: All statistical averages are from Week 5 to Week 8, unless otherwise specified.

Fantasy football busts: Wide receivers

Steve Smith, Carolina Panthers vs. New Orleans Saints

Fantasy value: Midrange No. 2

  • Carolina Panthers WR Steve Smith
    Voodoo could plague Smith
Smith has caught 13 passes for 135 yards over the last two weeks since returning a leg injury. He has been targeted 23 times in that stretch.
  • The Saints are giving up only 9.25 receptions, 99.8 receiving yards and 0.25 receiving touchdowns per game to this position. Each of those is in the bottom 10 averages allowed to this position.
  • Corners Jabari Greer (shoulder) and Tracy Porter (knee) both returned to practice last week, in a limited fashion, and could return for New Orleans this week.
  • One week after Matt Moore threw for 208 yards and two scores, he managed only 194 yards and one score while throwing three picks. Inconsistency should continue to plague him, which makes Smith risky.

Steve Johnson, Buffalo Bills vs. Chicago Bears

Fantasy value: No. 2 or No. 3

  • Johnson caught five passes for 37 yards and one touchdown last week. He has 18 receptions for 241 yards and four touchdowns since Week 4.
  • Chicago is giving up 10.00 receptions for 118.0 receiving yards and 0.67 receiving touchdowns per game. Those three per-game averages each rank in the bottom 10 fantasy matchups for this position over the last month.
  • The Bears are also giving up only 11.9 yards per reception, which is the sixth lowest average in the league.
  • Coming off their bye, Chicago should be welcoming back Lance Briggs (ankle) and Major Wright (hamstring), which should solidify their defense.
