Fantasy football busts: QB | RB | WR | TE | PK | DT

In this article KFFL breaks down fantasy football busts of the week. Some high-level players will be included, because you need to know when is time to sit a player even though it may not seem appropriate. Primarily, however, we will address the midrange to low-end fantasy options that you rack your brain over each week. Read on to learn which of these players that you wouldn't want in your lineup.

Note: All statistics are from Week 6 to Week 9, unless otherwise noted.

Fantasy football busts: Quarterbacks

Tom Brady, New England Patriots at Indianapolis Colts

Fantasy value: Midrange No. 1

  • Before the hate mail starts pouring in: We're talking about a curb-your-expectations recommendation here. The Colts aren't the Tennessee Titans, Tampa Bay Buccaneers or Miami Dolphins, the Pats' last three doormats - err, opponents.
  • Brady averaged 340.0 passing yards and 3.33 aerial scores per game against these scrubs. The Colts defense hasn't faced the best opponents, either, but this much more disciplined D has yielded just 216.3 passing hashmarks and 0.67 touchdowns.
  • The Colts secondary has done a solid job of filling in for their injured starters; rookies Jerraud Powers and Jacob Lacey have made noise, and it isn't like Indy has had to live without safety Bob Sanders (elbow) before.
Matt Ryan, Atlanta Falcons at Carolina Panthers

Fantasy value: No. 1 or bench

    Matt Ryan, QB, Atlanta Falcons
    Matty has gone ice cold
  • Matty Ice has been pretty cold of late, totaling just six touchdown throws and an uncharacteristic eight picks in his last four games. He has eclipsed 200 passing yards just once in that time.
  • The Panthers' pass D has contained some big quarterbacks in the last two games, including the Arizona Cardinals' Kurt Warner and, last week, the New Orleans Saints' Drew Brees. Despite Brees' large yardage total, Carolina's per-game numbers against slingers are attractive: 210.5 passing yards, 1.00 touchdowns, 1.75 interceptions.
  • For what it's worth, Ryan tossed three scores and totaled 220 yards in his Week 2 meeting with Carolina. His other two dances with them from his rookie season weren't productive, though: no touchdowns, average of 208.5 aerial yards.

NEW - Donovan McNabb, Philadelphia Eagles at San Diego Chargers

Fantasy value: No. 1 or bench

  • McNabb completed just 16 of his 30 passes last week for 227 yards and one score. He also threw his first two picks since Week 1, a span of five games. The vet has just five touchdown passes in the last month, and three of those came in one game against the New York Giants' injury-hit secondary.
  • The Chargers have allowed just 162.5 passing yards, 1.25 passing touchdowns and 1.00 interceptions per game to this position. They're also recording 3.8 sacks per game.
  • Of course, the Oakland Raiders and Kansas City Chiefs help those stats, but San Diego has been solid against this position all year. From Weeks 1 through 9, they're allowing just 193.0 passing yards, 1.25 passing touchdowns and 1.00 interceptions per game to the position. The yardage is the fourth lowest per-game average in the league.
  • San Diego's pass rush has been improving in recent weeks, too; they sacked the New York Giants' Eli Manning five times last week. McNabb has been sacked 17 times in the last five weeks.

Tom Walker, at 02:00 on 11/12/09, says:

Never liked McNabb because he just knows how to win. I remember chuckling when the Eagles fan booed his pick; he did it for Syracuse; he did it for the Eagles without being a top talent himself--just a smart gutsy guy. Don't underestimate him--I say as a Pats fan. Right on about Brady. My beloved Pats just aren't that good--and haven't been in Indy for some time. Our fans are different than the Red Sox ones, because we don't mind losing. Our guys play hard; have built a great tradition, and losing a bit is OK. In 2002, when they didn't make the playoffs, Brady among others said "the fans felt sorry for us, that was so nice." Yep. They've been great. Missed the playoff last year at 11-5, well we played well. So, the Pats don't face pressure to "win" in Indy. If they do, great; if they don't, too bad. So I am starting Brady in my league. Curb my enthusiasm yes; but he might just knock the lights out....
