ESPN.com reports Joe Rodriguez, the older brother of New York Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez (hip), said during a phone interview with ESPNdeportes.com's Enrique Rojas that immediate surgery was recommended to remove a cyst from Alex's right hip, and that rehabilitation would take about 10 weeks. A source close to the situation said that the surgery is scheduled for Monday, March 9, in Colorado.
If A-Rod has surgery at the rumored time, he would miss at least the first six weeks of the season and would likely need a couple of weeks on a rehab assignment to get back in baseball shape. This is a huge blow to A-Rod's fantasy owners whose drafts have already been completed.
Rodriguez's backup is infielder Cody Ransom, who has impressed in Spring Training. However, he is very unproven and isn't the prototypical offensive force the position usually calls for. This might call for the Yankees to make another transaction to fill A-Rod's void.
The Yankees' lineup could take a hit with the uncertainty of how much offense catcher Jorge Posada (shoulder) can provide coming off shoulder surgery. First baseman Mark Teixeira is also known to be more of a second-half player as he has hit 39 points lower and has 20 fewer homers in the first half the past three seasons.
Rodriguez takes a big hit in the fantasy realm as he now drops from being one of the first players taken to potentially the early middle rounds unless an unlucky auto-drafter or uninformed participant takes him in the first round.
