Bernie Miklasz, of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, reports St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Ryan Ludwick (hamstring) was placed on the 15-day disabled list Wednesday, May 13, with a strained right hamstring. The team recalled outfielder Nick Stavinoha from Triple-A Memphis.
Ludwick came out of the game Tuesday, May 12, with the injury and said he didn't think it was serious. However, manager Tony La Russa said after that game that Ludwick had a real sore spot, and he didn't anticipate good news. It's unknown how serious the injury is or how long he'll will be out. Ludwick has a .274-8-26 line with 16 runs in 106 at-bats this season.
Stavinoha and outfielder Shane Robinson should receive playing time in right field, and Colby Rasmus should stay in center until outfielder Rick Ankiel (neck) returns. Rasmus has struggled (.261-1-8), but he has value in NL-only leagues and should be added in deep mixed leagues given his considerable upside.
Robinson and Stavinoha have no fantasy value unless La Russa sticks with one exclusively; even then they'd have value solely in NL-only leagues. Robinson was already with the big-league club, and Stavinoha might be preferable as a versatile bat off the bench for La Russa, so of the two, Robinson might receive the first shot. However, nothing has been said for certain.
Hold on to Ludwick until he returns from the injury.
