The Associated Press reports St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa said reliever Chris Carpenter will be the closer when he's available, which could be once per series.
Reliever Chris Perez has been pitching in save situations lately, and he recorded seven saves in nine chances since returning from the minors to work on his slider. La Russa said he would use Perez and reliever Jason Motte in the setup innings when Carpenter closes. He didn't say who would close when Carpenter is unavailable, though.
Those of you who held on to Carpenter will receive a boost with Carpenter's save potential. However, with 19 games left in the season, he is only expected to pitch a few more times. The Cardinals' schedule is a little rough; in those 19 games, they play the Chicago Cubs six times and the Arizona Diamondbacks four times. The other nine games are against the Cincinnati Reds and Pittsburgh Pirates.
Carpenter and Perez are both worth owning if you need saves. However, they limit each other's fantasy value. Fantasy owners who have little to gain in the saves department might find a better way to use Perez's roster spot now.
