The St. Louis Post-Dispatch's Derrick Goold reports the team wouldn't speculate how long he'll be out. Carpenter said the pain level was pretty high. That could mean he may miss a month or more.
This is bad news for fantasy owners who thought they had a steal in Carpenter. The good news is that the injury isn't related to his shoulder or elbow, areas in which he has a history of debilitating issues.
As long as you have the space, place Carpenter on your bench or a disabled list spot and ride it out. The team is relying heavily on him, but they will probably be very cautious with him. Boggs and Walters present NL-Only options if you're thin at the position, but not much more.
Save speculators should scoop up Perez. The demotion of pitcher Brad Thompson means that Perez could be up for a while. Given the instability in St. Louis' bullpen, Perez could have his shot at closing games in the near future. Boggs needs to show something, even to NL owners, before he's worth a look.
