New York Yankees fans may not like it, but outfielder Gary Sheffield (wrist) refuses to play through injury as Sheffield was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a bruised left wrist.
Sheffield, 37, has no contract beyond this season and doesn't want to risk further damage to his body after the team balked at picking up the option on his contract for 2007. Self preservation is respectable when you've played your entire career through injuries.
Expect Sheffield to miss two weeks or so and come back strong. In the meantime, place him on your bench or disabled list and choose from the following options until he returns:
- San Diego Padres outfielder Dave Roberts stole three bases May 8 to give
him 10 on the season and is hitting .275. He will provide you with runs scored
and stolen bases.
- Houston Astros outfielder Preston Wilson has nine hits in his last 24 at-bats
(a .375 clip) to improve his average to .252. This could lead to another power
onslaught like the one he opened the season with.
- Minnesota Twins 2B/3B/OF Michael Cuddyer is quietly hitting .323 with three
homers, eight RBI and two steals. He's been consistently getting it done all
