With the Detroit Tigers sitting at 70 wins and leading the major leagues, general manager Dave Dombrowski wasn’t content to sit still. He made his first move at the trade deadline early in the morning of July 31, acquiring first basemen Sean Casey from Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for pitcher Brian Rogers.

The Tigers immediately optioned regular first basemen Chris Shelton to Triple-A Toledo, signifying where Casey was going to be used. Casey brings a .304 career average, 121 career home runs and 634 career RBI over nine seasons. This season he is hitting .296 with three home runs and 29 RBI in 57 games. He will add another left-handed bat to the Tigers lineup and will provide a major upgrade over Shelton, who had struggled after getting off to a great start in April.

Shelton should not be written off, however, especially with Casey being day-to-day with an oblique injury. If Shelton can recover his swing down at Triple-A, he could return but will most likely be a platoon player at most. He has hit .277 with 16 home runs and 45 RBI this season.

So what did the Tigers give up to get Casey? Not much. Pitcher Brian Rogers came over from the Tigers and the Pirates must see something in the pitcher who has yet to make a major league appearance. His fantasy value this season is next to nothing, and he is a project for the Pirates.
