Renteria Down Again; Replace Him for the Stretch Run

The Atlanta Braves have placed shortstop Edgar Renteria (ankle) on the 15-day disabled list with a high ankle sprain. It is the second time this month that Renteria has gone on the disabled list with the same ankle sprain. He returned from the DL Wednesday, Aug. 22, only to hurt his ankle again in his first plate appearance. The team is hoping that another 15 days of rest for Renteria will have his ankle strong enough to complete the season.

Renteria is hitting .336 with 11 home runs, 53 RBI, 74 runs and 11 stolen bases through 106 games this season. Those numbers, especially the average, will be hard to replace but there are still some decent options out there to replace him. Braves shortstop Yunel Escobar will replace him on the team, as he did earlier this month when Renteria was out. Escobar is hitting .318 with two home runs, 23 RBI, 31 runs and four stolen bases in 64 games. He won't provide you with great power numbers or an average as good, but with solid RBI, run and stolen base totals (in comparison to Renteria's), he would be a decent pickup. He is available 95 percent of leagues polled.

Seattle Mariners shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt is having a monster August (by his standards) and would be a solid replacement for Renteria. He is hitting .295 with eight home runs, 51 RBI and 58 runs this season. However, in August, he is hitting .365 with three home runs, 16 RBI and 15 runs in 19 games. Those are numbers similar to what Renteria would have and make Betancourt a solid fantasy sub until Renteria returns. He is available in 98 percent of leagues.

Finally, consider Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim shortstop Maicer Izturis. Izturis is hitting just .262 in August, but he has three home runs, 12 RBI, nine runs and two stolen bases in 21 games. He should be available in most leagues.

Keep an eye on KFFL for any updates on Renteria. It looks like he rushed back too soon, and the team could take their time getting him back from this DL stint.
