Ibanez received his first day off Sunday, June 14, to rest a sore Achilles' and has gone 0-for-8 with five strikeouts in the two games since then. It appeared he was having trouble running during the game Wednesday, June 17. Per manager Charlie Manuel, "It looked like tonight when he hit that ball to shortstop he couldn't turn it on. He kind of gimped. I saw that. It looked like it might have been bothering him." Groin injuries can be tricky, and if not treated properly, they could linger for weeks. While Ibanez is 37 years old, he is known for being in tremendous shape. He doesn't have a lengthy injury history, either. Still, there is no timetable for his return.
Outfielder John Mayberry Jr. was called up from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Ibanez's place. In 183 at-bats with the Triple-A team this year, Mayberry was hitting .257 with eight homers, 31 RBIs and four steals.
Infielder Greg Dobbs could also see a few more at-bats with Ibanez injured. However, he is hitting just .172 with a .310 slugging percentage and six RBIs in 58 at-bats this year. He has also been valuable as a pinch hitter in the past; Manuel might want to keep him in that role.
Place Ibanez on your bench or disabled list and hope his vacation doesn't deflate his monstrous first half.
Between Mayberry and Dobbs, the former offers the most upside. However, if you are looking for playing time, Dobbs could be given the most, at least initially. He is the left-handed bat of the two so Manuel might go with him when a righty is on the mound.
AL-only leaguers should target Dobbs first. If you miss out on him, grab Mayberry. Make sure to keep tuned to any updates on this situation to see if Manuel tips his hand on who will play. Mixed leaguers can hold off for now.
